There is a soon to be 3yr old intact female out of a combination I really like. The breeder called me and said her owner is thinking of getting rid of her because she sheds too much (trying to sell their home), is too high drive, and they are having twins. She is not titled, nor has she had her hips and elbows xrayed.

I was considering a pup from this same pairing, but am thinking of taking this one instead for a brood bitch. She has excellent structure and temperament, or at least she did as a pup. At this age, it's all a gamble.

She has been kept recently at a boarding kennel because of the dog hair problem, so I'd like to get her out of there and into my home as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance. I am torn about what's fair on this one. I know what he paid for her, but she's 3 and totally unproven. On the one hand, she's a well-bred female whose lines I would like to have in my program. On the other, she's potentially a rescue pet.

What kind of offer would you guys make the owner?

750.00 to 2000.00

A fair price would be what the current owner originally paid for the dog.  Equity doesn't come into play on a nontitled or x rayed dog.

Dougie, I agree about the equity. My hesitation to give him what he paid is that a puppy comes with a health guarantee; this dog comes with nothing at all, and, if she doesn't xray clear or has crap temperament, I'm not going to be able to sell her again OR return her, as you would/could w/a pup.

Just throwing out all the possibilities....

I don't want her to end up at the pound, which is where she's headed I'm afraid. I'd rather lose some money than have that happen. At least if she's with me, I can guarantee she won't end up anywhere bad.

Jenni78,
I would pay around $1500 to $2,000 if I liked the lines and the dog was really nice.  I don't know the pedigree of this dog, but if the dog was titled and x rayed I'd go higher.

Jenni,
I would "honestly" offer $1000-2000.......she is already 3yrs old, and has not had her hips & elbows done.
That is in MY opinion a fair price on a quality bred "companion" dog.......
If the hips & elbows certify....SUPER!  If she becomes what you desire from her...EVEN BETTER!.......BUT if she does not.....the financial gamble was not more than a puppy from a quality breeding would have cost.....did that make sense??
again...JMO..
Best wishes & good luck!

Since you seem to know the breeder, maybe they would transfer the health guarantee over to you. Seems they would be glad to, in order to assure the bitch they bred will be going to a good and responsible home.
A breeder who takes pride in what they sell, should offer a lifetime health guarantee under normal wear and tear. If their guarantee is only for a short time after puppyhood, then it's useless.

I look at her unknown sides with a more positive slant than her being all a gamble or even a rescue. And forget titles. You know they give some idea, but really titles are alot about training.

Since you know (and obviously <g>) like the pedigree, then a lot of the unknowns are an educated risk like the hips annd elbows. The same as it would be if you started out with a puppy from the same breeding --pretty much. Unless she had some sort of injury or they blew out her joints by doing some whacky stuff with her...although that seems unlikely from how you explain her background.

Good temperament is good temperament. Unless they made her into a freak-a-zoid, she should still have that genetic good temperament in there.

Is there any way to get a recent pict of her? Or can you go see her?

As for price, I would start with what he wants for her and negotiate from there.

Have you seen her or can you go check her out to see what she is like? Have that stated a price they want for her? I would see what they say about the $$ first and then go from there.

Problem is I can't see her, they have no recent pictures (too busy cleaning up dog hair I assume, lol), and am largely going by what the breeder assured me she was when he sold her. I trust him implicitly. I worry that she's quite overweight and may have damaged her hips. This guy is looking to get rid of her in a hurry; I feel like I'm rescuing her at this point. Keeping her at a boarding kennel to avoid dog hair in the house? Seriously? I feel for them, but geez. Poor dog.

Thanks to everyone so far!
