I am in the Chicago area, and I have just started working with this family to get Nala the care she needs so she can stay at home with a disabled boy who needs her very much. She already has an appointment with an outstanding ophthalmologist. Will keep everyone posted.

I live near Chicago as well. Consider calling Fox Lake Animal Hospital and speak with Dr Rudawski. He is wonderful and FLAH has some of fairest rates in this area.

Banfield, ugh. You couldn't pay me to take my dogs to those yahoos.

Thanks Susan&thek9s. I'm happy to hear that she'll be going to a canine opthalmologist. We all want to help, so please let us know what the doc says. When is the appt?

Maybe someone in the Chicago area could go actually meet Beverly and see her dog.

I'm happy she'll get to stay with Cody, they shouldn't be separated.  Beautiful little boy, what a gift!  I hope it all works out, please do keep us updated.  I don't have much right now but am willing to make a small donation.

I wasn't able to open the post.  What eye condition does your dog have?  My dog has pandis and uses Optimune and prednislone as well.   She has not needed surgery.   I would try a  2nd option.   I understand the skeptical thing,  I would suggest if people are going to send money for any surgery to help the dog, that it is sent right to the vet.  That way it is more of a safer way to ensure that it is legit. JMO.

Have you checked out this facility?  http://www.eyecareforanimals.com/    I get my CERF tests done by them before I send them to Purdue.  Have you even checked out Purdue University?   http://www.vet.purdue.edu/vth/    I know through personal experience that when I am confronted by serious health issues with my dogs, the best choice is to go to the University of Illinois Veterinary College.  Purdue University has the best eye care facility as that is where the CERF (Canine Eye Research Foundation) results are sent.  You would be surprised at how cost favorable going to the colleges can be.  When my retired guy had heat stroke, It was the best decision I could have made, 24 hour care by a team of not only students but of professors.  Maybe that's an option.

I hope you can keep Dakota/Cody together. I am working with an elderly patient in a psychiatric ward just now, and I am amazed by the improvement in her spirit since we have had clearance to have her dog visit her each evening. I would love to hear that you could keep them together, but I know you have to juggle priorities and weigh things up. If it's not possible then you're doing the right thing trying to find a good home.
