Check out the Diamond website for a complete listing of their contaminated foods that were processed @ Gaston, N.C. ...17 dogs have died. I would change foods immediately. Try a high end food, like Canidae, Best Breed, Eukanuba, Royal Canin etc. Get away from corn being the major ingredient, as it is in Diamond.

Oh, I forgot Abady..it's one of the best.

I would suggest avoiding all Diamond products. There is a lot going on behind the scenes and there is good reason to think that this contamination is nothing new for Diamond and could affect other brands of Diamond feed. Unfortunately, 4 of the dead dogs in Georgia belonged to a friend of mine, 3 were AKC champions, the 4th a 13 month old bitch (not GSD's). She owned 9 dogs total, all but one were fed Diamond. A 4 month old puppy bitch was eating Eukanuba, she did not get sick and continues to be in good health. 4 of the 8 eating Diamond got sick and died with 2 weeks. As a preventative, all dogs were given IV's and meds and 3 of them are now at home doing OK and they never did show any signs of being sick. The 4th is still in the vets as a precaution, she's a senior citizen with a compromised immune system. Originally the diagnosis was lepto. The vets involved think that multiple dogs can share the same bag of feed and not all will get sick as some will ingest more of the aflotoxin than others since it is not evenly distributed thorougout the kibble. Her dogs went off their feed a week or so prior to getting sick, they still ate, but their appetites were off and they often left food in the dish which was not normal for them. If you've fed Diamond, watch your dogs for lack of appetite, vomiting and bloody diarrhea. It may be mild at first. Once the jaundice is evident, it is probably too late, most are destined to die at that point. So far, we know of only one that has survived after he became jaundiced. These dogs were eating machines prior to getting sick, now they take the time to smell their food before they dive in. I won't attempt to analyse that!

I have fed Eukanuba and it was great for all of the dogs (various breeds, sizes, and ages) but only two of the dogs liked the taste and one of those would eat her own leg if she was hungry. I use Iams and all of the dogs do well on it. My mother feeds the same now (I lived with her during the Eukanuba phase) and all of the dogs do wonderfully on it. Just find something with MEAT as the main ingredient that your dogs thrive on and, equally important, they LIKE. Eukanuba is a great food but it did my family no good since the dogs wouldn't eat it.

I've had good luck with the Kirkland (Costco store brand) premium dog food. The main ingredients are meat (chicken or lamb) and rice, the dogs seem to love the flavor, and it puts weight on them quite well, with no loose stools as GSDs seem prone to have with low quality foods. Plus it is quite reasonably priced, albeit you have to have a Costco membership to shop there.

Eukanuba used to be a really good food but the quality has decreased dramatically. If you feed Eukanuba you may as well feed purina. They have a ton of by-product in their food, rendered animals etc.... there is a great web-site with great info about nutrition it is as follows caninesincrisis.org I found it to be very helpful in learning about lables and such. Among some of the best kibbles are Canadei, wellness, Innova, solid gold, abady, california natural, Evo also the whole food journal spoke of these foods. It's well worth anyone's time to check out the nutrition sites.
