A cheap 410 pump shotgun would come in handy.

There is no poison I know of for snakes.

Guineas can be found through hatchery's but ain't cheep and must be penned or they will only feed the owls, not sure that they would have any effect on snakes at all.

I would trust a barrier if done correctly.

A mongoose is too slow for a rattler. They will get bit and die every time.  Big Bullsnake or two, will keep the rattlers away.

I have to edit this. Upon further thought, I have seen rattlers and bullsnakes in the same area, on the same day. A bullsnake can defeat a rattler in combat, but in an open area the rattlers will still probably come around.

I have had rattlers in the house on two occasions.  My old lab built up an immunity against rattlers, and would kill them quick.

Rose do you have anti venom on hand?Aside from a mongoose I think the only other natural predator of snakes would be a hunting bird or an owl? Perhaps you could contact the local university extension office of agriculture askng them for a county abatement program for rattlesnakes?

The feedstore in Whitehouse told me  an antidote for snake bite by poisonous copperheads is     Soak a piece of bread in Bacon grease. I said are you kidding me??  NO he said and he is an old timer.

He said also Guineas do have to be kenneled for few days to bond to place and know where  their feeding place is , and then put up when dogs out. and the cayotes will get them if you do not put up ...ok..so he is calling a man who has some , if he can find his name and number.

I have a place I can put them  . I think cattle fence with the 4" holes is ok ?  I can use the kennel on the pallets to put their feed in and water and lock them up except they are wild he said...wow    this could be funny

...do they fly over fences?   I do know to cut wings if chickens are to be kept in a pen?

Abhay      Where is Capt'n Mike when I need him?

YR,

Alas, the Good Capt., is still being held hostage by Somali pirates.  I haven't had any extra cash, and have been unable to gain his freedom.

Abhay is right,
There are non-poisonous snakes that will kill and eat vipers.

Guineas fly and are basically wild by nature, they will roost in trees.

Wings are pinioned when chicks are small but hardly anyone does it anymore.

Old timers think you can pull the venom out, this is a myth.

I figured the Capt. was on some tropical island teaching the native girls how to swab a deck and bring grog without spilling it while at sea.

AYE !
That was what I figured.

Buy a 20 gauge shotgun. Easier to handle. Cheaper up front and ammo. I meant, that if I lived there I'd do the whole 3 acres with that fence. I have a tree farm north of me and they have thousands of acres with this around it.

So you soak a piece of bread in bacon grease and what???????????????? Eat the bread? What was that old codger smokin? CroFab is the commercial name for a Crotalidae Polyvalent Immune Fab (Ovine) snake antivenom, indicated for minimal or moderate North American Crotalid (Rattlesnake) snake envenomation. It is developed and manufactured by BTG plc (formerly Protherics PLC), and distributed in the US by Nycomed Inc. Crotalid snakebites can range from mild to life-threatening, depending on the size and type of snake, the amount of venom injected and the location of the bite. This in turn determines the number of vials of CroFab that are required by the patient. Untreated, the snake venom can cause severe pain and tissue damage that can result in the loss of a limb or even death. Prompt (within 6 hours of snake bite) treatment with CroFab is recommended.

CroFab has been well received by physicians because of its efficacy and safety profile. This has encouraged doctors to treat more bite victims, including patients with milder bites, as well as to start treatment with CroFab earlier in the course of poisoning to reduce its severity.

I almost laughed in his ear and I ask him   YOu are kidding me ...and do what???   eat it...??? Its for the dog ..I do the benedryl and heavy vit C and an antibiotic of Cephflex..

This is for copperheads I guess as they are the less poisonous.  I have a shot in fridge from vet if dog gets bit but my gosh, I am getting more confused as I go.

Sam Spade :  I have a shotgun by my bed...what do I put in it..???I have a box of buckshot...It is a Remington 12 ga

Box says   9 pellets  BUCK??

BUt this gun has a bad KICK but I will use it if I have to for a water moc or a rattler...

And I cannot put in pocket.>>ha ha ha
I have a 38 special with two kinds of shot and in it at this time is   Jacketed Hollow point 158 gr  but that is not need for a snake is it.?  I have a few regular shot left just metal point  .  Do not have any wad cutters?    Would wad cutter amo kill a snake or do I us just the metal or lead  amo?

You can go into any gun shop, and get "snake shot" ammo for your 38.
