Solution is simple. Register with both. Register with all upstart KCs (which are much younger than UKC). Always register with AKC, but there's no reason to outright avoid the others. In fact, I'd say I see some better dogs over there (at least in structure). Would be nice if we could breed out the skinny long-flat-headed long-pasterned AKC types by getting in some of the hardier types seen in other registries.

Blitzen/Betty.. Mike not big enough to take up for himself? Otherwise if you two idiots would look Mike attacked me first. In a later post I apologized to put this to rest but Mike refuses to give it up and keeps coming after me. Maybe you should read all the posts! Thanks Rebel and I agree with you, I am starting to register with both. I have seen plenty of AKC top show level dogs that were pretty pathic but that's not AKC fault but the breeders. The purpose of this post was not to trash AKC or UKC but..AGAIN.. just wanting to know if other people are seeing increased UKC level's in their area? PS: Betty-- are you Mikes Old Lady? Seriously?

UKC has been around as a registry a long time, longer than AKC I believe. 20+ years ago I attended a UKC show - all hunting dogs, about 8 varieties of coonhounds, only 1 of which was eligible for AKC as well. Many "working" breeds have a presence in UKC - working meaning hunting breeds, looking at their website, this is obvious! The UKC clubs I know of are sportsmen clubs, and although I know that Obedience titles are available, I have never seen any events in this area that are UKC approved other than the coonhound ones. I have never heard that "Working GSD" people are using UKC anywhere - but I do remember seeing a website a year or so ago that they were trying to start a protection sport....I believe it is rather stagnant, and one of the main people moved to FL and is out of dogsport now.

No, UKC is younger than AKC. IIRC AKC was founded 1886 (hence the big national centennial show in 1986 - won by Covy-Tucker Hill's Manhattan, a GS), whereas UKC was 1898. I'm not sure you're thinking of the right club when talking about sporting-dog emphasis. I think it's the "National Kennel Club" (NKC) that was founded on and still *heavily* focuses on sporting dogs.

Kougar....We are seeing some of the GSD people starting to compete in UKC and they are still doing so in AKC. I see several of the police K9 people also starting to go thru the UKC. Most are double registering but one of them now will not register with AKC for whatever their reasons. Thanks for the info.

No, go to the UKC site - it is very heavy in sporting breeds - particularly coonhounds! they have a discussion list which is almost all coonhound driven....but I know they have shows and obedience trials too...

I seem to remember recently in two different forums, and sites pf people talking of getting a PD 1 and 2 for their dogs in the KC Protection trial of some sort. Cheryl Carlson talked about it on he site and then someone on the PSA site.. http://www.dogsports.com http://www.psak9.org
