My grandfather was a breeder of pointers for hunting.  He regularly culled pups and would usually just keep 2-3 out of a litter.  I never understood it.  Of course the ones he kept turned out to be fine big hunters but who knows what the ones would have been he culled had they been allowed to live?  I agree with you Jenn in letting nature take its course.  I am not a breeder--have only bred 5 litters in my life and one thing I learned early was if the mother pushes something away something is wrong with it and I just let it be.  Sorry I just can't buy into it........

Sport Guy - I never said I did, or did not. I merely asked a question that some are afraid to pose on this forum due in part to comments like yours.

Does breeding a nine year old dog seem reasonable to you, it does to WLPool, how do others feel?

I think allowing nature to take its course 100% across the board would be a huge step up. I shudder to think of some of the brains who are playing God, deciding who should die and who should live in a litter. It's quite possible and quite likely that they are selecting the wrong pups altogether, really screwing future generations. I just don't trust someone who sets a number of puppies allowed to live  to have the brainpower and common sense to decide who lives and who dies.

I'll bet the people who call breeders 'greedy' for allowing them all to live are the same ones who do unnatural breedings- forced breedings, AI, etc. Me? I don't even watch; I just allow them access to each other and whatever happens, happens. One litter was not done this way; it was not my stud and not on my property. She'll have as many as nature dictates- not 12 because I forced them to tie 67 times. Then, since nature dictated how many pups, who am I to go against nature in the decision of who lives and who dies?

For the record, I have never culled a pup, or even had a reason to consider it. I have lost one pup and I had fallen asleep, so I don't know if she was stillborn or what, all I know is my bitch pushed her toward me and I picked her up and buried her. I don't breed very much though, so I'm sure my odds are not typical of breeders who breed many litters per year.

Jenni, on the interference thing, would you intervene if the female was unable to feed the pups?  ie, the pups themselves were born healthy but she stopped producing milk, got mastitis, etc?  I am not a breeder but I would hope the healthy pups could be fed or find a surrogate, and the female would be treated but not bred again?

Actually no it doesn't.  She was not to be bred.  My four year old daughter accidentally let the male in my house and the dogs mated.  I will NOT GIVE HER A HAMMER TO FIX HER MISTAKE.

Wendy, WoW, that is awful and ostensibly did not teach an appropriate lesson to those boys. IMO that should be abuse - both animal and child! I do not blame you for cutting that convo short. It is absolutely sickening! Renee

VK, yes, if something beyond anyone's control, and something that would NOT AFFECT THE GENETICS OF THE PUPS took place, then yes, I would feed them. Say, mom gets trampled by a horse and gets killed when the pups are 3 days old, of course, I would feed them.

My comment was not based on this topic but rather many post I have read and videos I have watched.

Modulus Rex moderator comment: I will not delete this or the prior comment directed at the OP, but rather would ask that you critique the content, not the person.

Except for labs and Golden Retirvers, how many hunting dogs have you seen at the local ASPCA? I'm thinking back and cannot remember seeing even one German Shorthair, Wirehair Or English Pointer......Culling is very harsh, but wow, maybe it works?
No I've never culled.

Excuse my ignorance, if you have to cull a puppy, how do you do that? is there a medicine or injection or what? how do you do it, do you do it yourself or bring a vet to do it? just want to know please.

Ibrahim
