PL, don't be upset....In your OP, no where does it state that you DID cull your litters..I can understand why you used the number 8....All it take is alittle time to think before letting the fingers take over, writing a response....

Far too often, the tendency is here to twist post around and give them a whole new meaning, or to just add more details which weren't in the OP....Just let it slide.....No need to argue, it is obviously the OP was kinda twisted from what you wrote...

Modulus Rex moderator comment: I have addressed the issue between the parties by posting a moderator comment on Page 2.  It is best if third parties leave such issues to the moderators.

ModulusRex, I was not trying to act as a moderator or the 3rd party...I was simply explaining something to PL.....

WOW, a 4yr old unsupervised long enough to let two GSDs together....UMMMMMMMM...OK....

Shouldn't a 9yr old bitch you don't want bred be spayed?????

Back to the OT, my question is, if anyone does cull, how do you actually cull puppies?

Thank you for making that point about the shelters.

Nona,
Lol.  I was actually in my office working.  I just happen to have a rather large home where one can miss these things.  But, I do remember how SOME people always like to think the worst first.  No, I won't spay her unless it is medical.  I have spayed in the past and have been very unhappy with the emotional change they go through after a spay.  Further, they have lost drive and gotten lazy and fat.
I have taught my daughter about how it is not good to breed older dogs with the puppy that did not make it.  My daughter has learned a valuable lesson about breeding and when you have to be very careful about when to let dogs into the house.
But, just to make a point, she allowed a Sch 1 Kkl 1 import to be bred to a Sch 3 Kkl 1 import that so happens to be a repeat breeding.  I would have bred her myself if it were not for her age. AND I will be keeping a puppy from this litter even though it was unplanned.

Doesn't the SV limit the number of pups to be suckled by the dam to 8?  Maybe that's where Pirate's Lair got that number to start the debate.

Wlpool, FWIW, if the bitch is in good health, there are many others who would've bred them intentionally. I agree with your reasons for not spaying, either. None of mine will ever be spayed or neutered simply due to age or the fact I don't breed them (I don't breed my Pit Bulls, though they are intact...I don't breed my Chihuahuas, but they have been intact). You just have to be extra cautious when doing so...far more cautious than most people feel like being, so they preach spay and neuter for all.

As to the things being "twisted" this identical thread is being discussed on other forums, and that's where the details are coming from- no one made them up out of thin air. It got confusing because things were not posted here that were posted elsewhere.

I think yes, DD, but the extra pups should go to a wet-nurse bitch, not have their lives ended. That's what I read somewhere ,( by the Captain's own words, I'm nearly 100 percent sure.)

Then this is not culling, this is fostering

There would never be any way I would ever cull a healthy puppy. Maybe I'm a sissy, and should stick to prissy foo-foo dogs, but no. I would not be able to live with myself. I don't really care if others do, but I doubt I'd buy from someone that did. I would even go as far as trying my very best to save every puppy in the litter. Ugh, I got chills just imagining killing an innocent puppy. Now maybe I should go find a papillon to buy and stay out of shepherds, lol.

Sitasmom, how popular are those dogs for familes, though? I mean, I don't see many full blooded dogs in shelters anyway, much less rarer breeds. You don't see many havanese, either, though I doubt many havanese breeders cull. I see your point, though.

Jenni78, it's a good thing you don't breed English bulldogs, lol. ;)

DD- I'm sure if you asked breeders in Europe if they culled (Killed) healthy puppies from a litter over 8, most would respond with "nope".  The "written rule" is the female shoudln't raise/nurse over 8 puppies - and on the registration forms there is space for foster dam information for litters greater than 8.

and, please keep in mind there are other ways to cull, rather than KILL.  Selling puppies with limited registrations, early spay/neuter, puppies sold/given away with spay/neuter contracts - or otherwise making sure the "culls" will never be bred is still "culling".

Fair enough, Molly.  I certainly don't advocate killing the excess, and hope no one got that impression.
