Good Point!
If a dog is sold and the pedigree is locked from the original owner, how does the new current owner make any changes if it is necessary?

Well, you have to start somewhere!  At least if you start with the oldest, you can keep making headway!
It's better than allowing someone to go in maliciously and change anything they want!  How do you certify that?

Modulus Rex moderator comment: The PDB isn't an official breed registry.  Even if 99% accuracy were achieved, people still shouldn't act solely in reliance on what is posted here.  There is only so much that can be expected of a free website with volunteer administration.

Maybe I'm missing something here.......  Where has it ever been said the pedigree's here are certified?  This is an open database, not a registration service that certifies pedigrees and information about the dogs.  People maliciously changing pedigrees and pictures are scum.  People filling in blanks for their own dogs or own dogs ancestry in good faith are what help create many of the pedigrees here.

A lot on here are fine with the pedigrees of there dogs possibly being tampered with. In some cases it may improve them
However i do not beileve such things should be allowed to happen more so when you will never know who has done it everyone is powerless to do anything about it

I totally agree Rex!  But if it's completely open, it can't be trusted at all, so what's the point?  At least if the oldest ones were locked by a KNOWLEDGE base, people would have a degree of certainty.  What's the point of having a database that is based on the whim of any individual, with any motive?  Why bother?

From my original post:
Questions/suggestions:
Is it possible to include in the new TOS or somewhere that changes to any info will not be made by anyone other then the person who registered the dog here originally?
Unless say the dog had died?

The comments section on every dog is available for anyone to use right now. Changes/corrections to pedigrees can be posted there by anyone very easily without changing the original information and mucking about with someone else's dog.

If a dog is 20 years old I think it's safe to assume it's no longer living. Maybe leave those open for editing so holes can be filled in and corrections made but lock all the others. Given the size of the database it may not be possible for Oli to set something like that up and have it be manageable. A lot of pedigrees would have to be unlocked on a regular basis. Since one pedigree affects many others there might be issues between locked and unlocked data also.

I don't think locking is the answer given the logistics and the original purpose of the databse. Which is why I suggested adding something to the TOS. Since changes are recorded now, if someone has a pedigree tampered with, they can report it and the offender dealt with easily by the mods.

Anyone caught changing pedigrees maliciously will be banned. Anyone who finds a defaced pedigree needs to contact an admin.

Without people being able to change pedigrees this site would not have near the pedigrees it has.

We could have 30 people do this full time and still never see the end of the pedigrees.

Steve, nobody, not one person, has said it's okay to maliciously tamper with a pedigree. Stop making it sound like everybody is okay with a free for all.  That is not what's been said.   What people have said is filling in verifiable information on their own dogs, or their own dogs ancestors, is okay.    Any changes to pedigrees is tracked.  Not sure why you can't see that. perhaps you have not looked at a pedigree where there were changes to track.

"What's the point of having a database that is based on the whim of any individual, with any motive?"

Modulus Rex moderator comment:  No one has kept exact stats so this is entirely anecdotal, but judging from posts on the issue I doubt more than 10 or 20 pedigrees are maliciously altered per year.  The amount of foolishness just doesn't justify that kind of effort.

"Which is why I suggested adding something to the TOS."

Modulus Rex moderator comment: A draft Terms of Service provision requiring only good faith entry and editing of pedigrees, with "malicious alteration" prohibited, has just been submitted to Oli.
