The only e mail I have is a hotmail, so Bob's suggestion on the e mail doesn't suit me, but I have no problem about using the real name though I don't think it suits everyone here.

I see we are right on topic.

To answer a few questions.

We have the right to share emails or private messages between moderators. We are sent a lot of private messages and we need to share some of them to make decisions. All moderators sign a Confidentiality Agreement and are instructed if they do not comply they are taken off moderation and if they divulge any information they can and will be removed as a member.

We will not go to real names. I can open a Facebook page as John Belushi it does not mean my real name is John B. Email accounts tell you nothing and with the amount of stalking that goes on here I would never release my email address.

Mods have 2 user names because they are members and being it would get confusing if they are talking as a mod or as member. Plus we have already had to remove our post history because we have a few members who like to follow the moderators around and harass them.

Oli wants the mods to remain unknown if they had to keep their regular user name it could be connected to their business or contact info. All he wants is for some unknown person to harass his volunteer moderators.

Okay back on topic then...

How about 2 and 3 of my suggestions?

by Ibrahim on 24 February 2011 - 18:02

Volunteer moderators, you're not paid for moderating? why would you moderate free of charge? I wouldn't do that myself.

 Bob,

I agree to suggestions 2 and 3 but more important is moderators agree to them, and Yes Ibrahim is a name of a prophet, but it is my real name. I use my real name as I know it won't hurt me in anyway but if I were living in the States and due to safety reasons I might also not reveal my real name as others do, I wouldn't claim I'm better.

Lets get real... I,ve enjoyed many a meaningless conversation and thread here and have been the author of some. If I need real hard info on training or fact yes there are some here who I would contact for there opinions and idea,s but if I need real info on training my dogs I get it at my club or training group or trainer.

This  site is loads of fun most of the time and helpful some of the times and mind numbing on occasion but that is the nature of the Internet it,s like a big basket of fruit, it is all edible but some taste better then others.

The reason I,m a "whinner" on real names is because most that come here to just stir the shit or spread false rumor would never do it if they had to sign there name to it... It,s easy to degrade someone if you don,t think any one can find out who you are it,s another to have the stones to put it out there and lay claim to it.

I enjoy many here and tolerate others...

Bob,

The thing is those same people are never going to tell you their real names. It is the internet and some people tend not to be truthful. How are you going to verify that the person who says he is John Freeman is actually John Freeman?

What works is moderation. You said yourself "the other forums use real names". Yes and the other forums have all been moderated since day one.

Training and basic foundation work are probably the most important thing in dog training so why would you search the net for something that needs one on one attention unless your looking for advice on who to get it from... and god knows that never gets a off the wall response or starts a world of s__t.

Mod:

You try it just like you do Moderators and as you find someone using a alias you thro them off... if you want to play moderator don,t complain about the things you will be eventually be responsible for... if it,s too much work I,m sure Oli makes some $ from this site work a deal.

Actually that's Oli's call, and until the day he decides people should use real names rather than a screen name and he has a verification procedure in place, it's really not a mods job to determine who uses an alias and who doesn't.

Nona I understand where you are coming from, but the thing is, it's really not the job of the moderators to determine what is or isn't good dog advise, or to protect people from advise given in jest,  any more than it's their job to determine what's funny and what isn't.  That's the thing about the internet, it's basically buyer beware, that applies to everyone, no matter what their age.   People need to remember you get what you pay for, and advise on the internet  is free, so it is up to the individual to always take everything they read with a large grain of salt.

As far as the mods go, I think their job is to moderate according to the Terms Of Service...period!!
