if you watch vit glisnik's videos, you will see an occasional pallet/placeboard positioned at the blind to discourage the dog from coming into the blind dirty.  at first, i wondered if it was some sort of innovated table training, but doesn't appear to be.  some dogs just require a bit more height to remain clean.  seems to be very effective.  i have toyed with the idea of using carpet samples as placeboards. could be incorporated into tracking, obedience and protection.  more portable than wooden boxes.  does anyone use such a thing for the sendout?  i would think that would work extremely well for initial training.

rams , I watched that video , and Im seeing different things going wrong here
first of all if she wants a correct exercise , I  would let the dog go down totally , wait about two seconds , then call him back , what Im seeing is a dog basically touching the pad , attempting a down , but not even finishing it

also with this buildup you have the risk of a dog going down , and coming back to you at a trail

also for  what they call an extremely driven dog , I think the running towards the pad is very relaxed

great pictures and wonderful advice ,,,personally i would use a small towel ... it's more versatile .. it makes the transition to bare ground a little faster for some dogs : i just diminish the size of the towel , all the way to a face cloth and then no towel....also  :  i can take the towel and teach positioning , anywhere , anyplace and anytime.. another : the dog will not get hurt , for the dog will not slip off the paltform or twist is't leg slipping of . towels won't hurt the dog -- on some surfaces some bred dogs actually like a soft , warm texture . . last advantage .. i can use the same towel and thought process to transfer to other exercises. the dog will learn faster  as it has the ability to generalize faster. considerikng canines are context specific learners the towel prompt is a familiarity as to what the dog has is experienced and as to what is expected ..

Personally, if it was any technique that Ed Frawley used, I would do the exact opposite and I'd bet the farm you'd have some success.

another manifestation is to have 'the target in your hand " .. it can be a small item or a small wand .. _ basically you teach the dog to touch it's nose to the target .. then reward .. ..you manuever the dog into the behavior by promting/  allowing / motivating the dog to touch the target...   a lot of versatility in this idea .. you can teach touch target and as you heel the dog , ,you can use touch the target to teach the dog a behind your back /reverse as you turn in the heel . sometimes if you use the touch the wand target notion  ,... the target need not be   in your hand .. the dog learns ' touch the target , no matter where it is'...  e.g you can teach down /sit  in motion - simply say sit & manuever the dog with the target so that it touches the target to the nose .. LISTEN .. this target technique is more than twenty years old ! there is nothing enlightening here .. not a critism ... THIS IS OLD NEWS !!  just the gurus haven't been preaching this technique .. .. until .. they found that there was money to be made  !! THAT IS the PROBLEM i take great offense to .. people looking to sell techniques instead of teaching people plum just how to understand how dogs learn , how to communicate to dogs, and how from that to teach dogs !! not a critism .. i guess that is just how the world works .. money money money .. BTW .. you will never learn what you Always need to know from a video that's sold .. there will always be .. the next video for the next lesson -- again this target stuff is way old hat .. but it works and has a lot of merit !!

AP , as I understand the magic want technique was tried but never broke trough because of "lack of hands"
if you want to hold a leish , a clicker , a wand and a piece of food , your running short of hands

DUKE, you have to know whta YOU"RE looking at.  You have to understand that this person is training in RING SPORT not SCHUTZHUND so they aren't going to down their dog. You have to do a little thinking for yourself. If your training the send out for schutzhund YOU make sure YOUR dog totally downs. Make sure your dog doesn't leave the down until you give the command or you go pick them up. Touch pads have been around for years.  Like any training style anyone can use them. Unfortunately not everyone will get the same results due to ability.
