I put a ball (or whatever reward the dog likes) under my chin, then when I do the toss I make the dog wait so he starts to get amped up, often starts barking, then I send him and as soon as he's back I out the dumbell and drop the ball from my chin (rewarding the speed coming back, not focusing on a perfect sit, wait, out, finish).  I've seen people make drive for the dumbell itself, that doesn't work for me as the dog is fast going out but not as fast coming back, or creates chewing.

On the recall I find that when dog is approaching you (4 or 5 feet away) throwing food or toy through my legs behind me works well.  Do this regularly interspersed with proper presents so dog doesn't know what to expect and speed should increase.  Works on retreive too.

this is my comment to my students.. recall ?? chrysler recalls broken vehicles !! as i stated on antoher thread going right now ../ everything is predicated on your relationship with your dog . 2. my dogs are not 'recalled' .. the relationship should be such that : your dog wants to be with you , come to you so desperately .. that .. they are given 'Permission ' to enter my space and be with me .... so do this : test your relationship with your dog ... as a pup i tie it to an object with a buckle collar . i slowly walk away and allow the dog to walk to the endof the line .  .. then i quickly leave it about a 30 feet ?? what will your dog do ??? how bad will your dog want to come to you ?? how bad ?? and what is the intensity [ motivation ] ?? when i see the dog ready to bring down the house  , i simply softly calmly state the dogs name and simultaneously have a freind unhook the pup ... the result : the dog should fly to you like lightening !! .. now if the desire and intensity is there ,  as you increase the distance the pup has to travel to get to you .. the faster and harder it will run to make up the distance to be with you !!Increse the distance=increase the desire ..  BTW this is a nice manuever to teach the dog pulling on a leash has no benefit to it !! always remember safety though .. same thing .. dog wants to eat .. then you better come and get it before the meal goes away ... you want a toy .. better come get it before i decide to keep it.. which brings me to the point : fulfill the dogs needs , wants , desires , such as :  being with you , food , toys .. and you won't go wrong !! notice i stated not what you want .. but what the dog needs / wants!! create the motivation / thenyou be the one to give permission and to  fulfill the need .

I  have no trouble with speed, what I have trouble with is the stops.  She literally puts on the brakes 2 feet away, and careens into me almost sending me flying.  Actually she has when I'm on slippery ground.

How do I stop this?

Haha, try being a male!

for the dog stoping 2 feet away..

do a run away with the dog..
get someone to hold the hold onleash 9 feet or more. so the leash handle doesnt get caught on his paws.
call your dog or (come) or here.
when the dog gets close break out a ball. and wait till 2 feet away well bring the ball alive, and toss the ball inbetween your legs, so he doesnt stop. and one he gets it. then he will stop like my dog. right to my crouch and looking up at me.

but i train recall everynight in the house or at the backyard...

hope this helps

Ha ha Don, sing deskcan much? :)

Thanks Nic, I'll try that!

by kaoboy on 13 March 2011 - 05:03

yeh,

give that a try..
i have tried with the ball under the chin, and with a dog that doesnt know better..
itll run full speed and all it will be looking is at the toy at your chest. and hell full jump and knock you over.
ive had it happen to me it hurts. and you cant get mad, just kinda laugh in pain..

for the ball under the chin works best for heel(foose)
dogs need to look at you for points. so that works best i think for that excerise!!!

I also do the "throw ball between legs" technique - works great for increasing speed. I do sometimes get knocked down as I don't throw the ball straight and he hits my knee - ouch!!!

For the stops, I've had some success with mixing in a "place" game where he has to stay right in front of me as I move around in different directions, and has to sit immediately when I stop moving. I do this for a few minutes, practice a speed recall (ball thrown), then practice a regular recall.
