I was wondering what kind of tracking line people use? Do you use a certain kind, and is it because of personal preference or is there a different reason for it? ie: wider which is heavier, or thin and lighter. Does the environment have a effect, wind, rain, long or short vegetation?

I have a 15' Sig Grip long line from Signiture K9. It is my favorite piece of equipment that I own....

The grip is awesome in any kind of weather!

hmm... for SchH you would need 30 ft.  and I think those rubber nubs would burn my fingers when tracking...I am still looking for a slim and simple cotton-webbing line in 30 ft length...any tips?

I can make you one how wide and what color? No Nubs or nubs? Handle or no handle?

Yes-

15 ft cotton web for training - some of my dogs need a 2nd line for "speed" control
Picked up a great 33 foot nylon gappay line @ WUSV (its pink & black my favorite colors) and have tested it out - stuff (burrs, stickers & dry leaves get stuck to it)
The "Pros" that I have seen use rolled leather.  I have not tryed it for my self but plan to this season.  I want what makes me comfortable because when I'm happy my dog is happy

I myself have a round leather and a synthetic 3/8" wide. The leather one requires more care but i like it best, it doesn't get snagged on stuff and when in higher winds it isn't blowing (popping the dog) like wider ones. The synthetic one is almost indestructible but i dont like the feel.

I will sometimes use two 15' lines in training for control also. Do you think the wind popping a wide web type line has a effect on the dog?

Yes for schutzhund tracking. And they should be 33' or 10 meters.

For training I use a 20' 1" nylon line with a bunch of knots in it so it's more like a 15' line after all those knots.

For trial I have a 35' 1/2" ASAT/biothane line.

I use a shorter line for training because I'm not going to deal with 15-20 extra feet of line I'm not using.  I've rarely, if ever, tracked 33' behind my dog.  I like ASAT overall but often for tracking training it gets slippery and I like having the knots in my nylon line.  Same line I use for protection.

I always track on my 33' tracking line, same line every track because part of my pretrack routine (to put my dog's head in the right place) is to lay him down and then slowly walk out the entire length of my line behind him. Just like you have to do trial day..... My personal choice is the gappay tracking line, but I believe that is up to you and what you like....unfortunately after 14 years with this line I need a new one, I had to stretch it about 2 1/2 feet at the Nationals this year...

Rolled leather, 10 meters in length.  Treated it one time when new and haven't touched it since, been using it for 12 years.  FYI, a 30 ft. leash in a SchH trial will get you sent back to the dugout for some new lumber.
