I just had a litter with 8 solid blacks..  2 sables and 1 bi color.  The most black these two have ever produced.  Neither one is solid black.  Must be something in the air..   lol
Good luck with yours..

My Main guy is a solid black... and VERY much a soul dog.  Blacks need stronger features to be impressive than Bl/tn, or sables do, as there's no markings to impress the looker.  Same could be said for a White.  But a Black with those features can knock my socks off.  My choices are a good dark Sable or a black.  But there's no such thing as a bad colored GSD in my book... it's what's inside the head and the Heart.

HighDesert, you really think facial features are too indistinct? I think it's that so few dogs really have nice heads and faces anymore that the lack of definition is simply more prevalent in solid blacks than other colors. I think this dog has a very expressive face w/nice features. It's just that as someone else mentioned, a black dog has to be so much more substantial, so much better constructed, etc. to look equal to a dog of another color, esp. in pictures.

I never did really care for black dogs, But then I got one that explained to me he was just as good as the sables that he keeps their color pigment strong, and under the hair he is the same thing.

What do you mean "keeps their color pigment strong"? Black doesn't improve pigment. A black dog can have great pigment and therefore produce pups w/good pigment, but as far as improving pigment, typically a very dark sable w/dark eyes, lips, gums, etc. is the way to go.

Ok Jen
The offsprings are darker sable than the sables on female side but also threw some black
