Deanna,
I think you have done a great job with that dog.  It's the challenging or difficult dogs that we learn the most from.

   Jim....: )

Yes, you are right about the learning. I have learned a lot with Prince...lol...

Just think, all I wanted was a handsome black and red Teddy Bear....

What I got, was a grizzly with a HOT TEMPER...lol...

So Ruger1, in hindsight, what would you have done differently that you believe would have changed Prince's fear response (aggression) to your fear (of uncertainty to control him) ? And do you think there is a vulnerable window in which a dog learns their fear response to certain stimuli?

Bee...

I think the biggest problem is that I am/was a weak handler...: (

As Prince was growing through normal changes of puppy hood, I did not build his confidence as I should have.. When he was going through an insecure puppy period, he did not have the confidence in my leadership that was necessary at that time. Prince took matters into his own paws, and things went down hill quickly....

I started to become very fearful of the way Prince would behave in situations that made him, and me uncomfortable... This would only intensify his fear (aggression) in certain situations..

Prince is a rascal, with a very suspicious and hot temper. I am a nervous, sensitive, worry wart, who should have got a female Lab instead of a male GSD......Bad combination....

In some ways I ruined my Princey Boy....Not intentionally, but in my ignorance none the less...:(

IMO with a different handler he would be an amazing dog on many levels...: )

I am working on transmitting confidience down the leash...And being a strong handler with clear expectations....

We are working on it...Getting better all the time....We wouldn't trade each other for the world.....:
