I spoke with a GSD breeder this week who claimed to have NO KENNELS. He said all 23 of his dogs live in the house with him and his family. Is it just me or does this seem kind of far-fetched? The breeder also said he doesn't believe in crates. He said he has a few crates, but never closes the doors so the dogs can come and go as they please. Guess I'm having a hard time imaging 23 dogs living in the same house together. How many dogs do others have living in their house? Most I ever had at one time was 3 dogs and that was plenty for me.

I'm a bit of a clean freak, so I can't imagine 23 dogs inside. Somebody is bound to have an accident. No kennels and no crates seems kinda strange to me. It's not like kennels or crates are themselves abusive. Leaving your dog to rot in one 24/7 is bad but they do have a place. I'm not buying this story.

23 dogs inside the house all at the same time? Yikes! I once visited with an AKC judge that bred Irish Setters. She had about 15 of them running free inside her house. When I pulled into her driveway I noticed all the curtains and blinds were shredded and barely hanging on the windows. That should have given me a hint of what was to come. This was a very nice residential neighborhood; I can only imagine what the neighbors must have thought LOL. It got even worse inside, dogs literally everywhere, some sitting side-by-side on the sofa, some sitting on foot stools just like people, their butts on the seat, their front feet on the floor ROFL. I had to step over dogs to use the facilities. I won't even mention the smell. The judge felt as if everyone lived that way, so maybe it's possible to have 23 dogs living inside the house and think it's normal? It would drive me nuts; I love dogs, but I also love a nice clean smelling house.

Thats incredible! We usually have 3 in the house at any one time and that is no problem, 4 is sometimes OK, more than 5 and someone usually gets picked on. not to mention them all getting under feet and tripping you up when the phone rings, and being far more prone to destructive activities like ripping things up when in a pack! We have two females who live in the house more or less all the time, the two adult males have to take it in turns in the house as they just cannot get on together! The other two and any puppies come in at times when we can give them some attention, but never all of them together. We do also have the back door open onto the garden most of the day. I Just cannot imagine 23 in a house!!! If they have clean, spacious kennels and come out regularly for walks and/or training I don`t see a problem..

Never more than 3 dogs here. The rest of the zoo resides indoors. Cats, birds, lizards, snakes, frogs, whatever else my kid brings home.

At any given time I can have 0 in the house when I'm not home to 3 when I'm not home, and when I'm in the house, anywhere from 0 to 10. My house stays clean, vaccum 2x's per day, sweep & mop 2x's per day, not because of messes but because of hair and sand here. Only things that does not come in the house more than one on one is the adult in tact males, They are brought in by themselves or with a few out of season females. In season females are exhiled to outside during season as to not get the males marking territory when they do come in cause they can smell her and smell the other boys. We don't have any problems, so long as we do it smart. The most I ever had in the house at one time was 15.

I know of a breeder who also keeps a TON of dogs in the house. There are crates, although they are only used when the breeder leaves the house. All of the furniture is wooden or metal, or the dogs eat it. Last count, there were 40+ dogs/puppies. Some stay inside the main living area of the house, others in other areas of the house or in outdoor fenced off areas, so not ALL of them were inside the house, by any stretch of the imagination. I can't imagine living that way. I love my dogs, but they aren't going to destroy my house. They come inside, two at a time. At night, they are all crated to avoid "issues" that could possibly happen while I am not supervising. I can't imagine having more than I already have to take care of. 23 dogs in the house would make me crazy! How can you properly socialize and care for 23 dogs? At only 1 hour per day per dog, you only get one hour of sleep per day!!! Perhaps they do it in a group, but then that's not exactly quality time, is it? Just my humble opinion. I could be wrong, because I've never BEEN there, but I also don't ever PLAN to be there. ;)

I have 3 in the house and IMO two's company... But the 3rd is a special dog, I wouldn't even have pushed for him to stay if he wasn't a perfect GSD, lol. I met a breeder with 20+ dogs in the house and her place is a pig sty and stank to high heaven. It was total chaos. Anyone with that many dogs in the house you have to wonder if they are in control of their breeding, ESPECIALLY if there's more than one male. Run don't walk

Echomeadows, you sound like a clean person; you'd have to be to clean 2 times every day. The lady I spoke of never cleaned anything; there were long red hairs everywhere and not an inch of any window was not obscured by dog snot. These dogs lived inside 24/7. No outside runs at all, just a decent sized fenced-in yard. I was amazed she never had any serious dog fights. It defied description LOL. That must have been 30 years ago, but I can still see it in my mind as if it happened just yesterday. BTW, in case anyone was wondering, she was divorced. The husband just couldn't take it any longer ROFL.
