Time to fold. This dog is not going to have a happy ending and there is nothing anyone here can do about that.

Dawulf, I don't know about where your parents live, but in my county in NC there is an ordinance that states:

"It shall be unlawful for any person in contact with or having knowledge of a sick, diseased or injured animal to fail or refuse to provide proper medical treatment for the animal or notify the Animal Control Department of the condition. A sick animal shall go no longer than 24 hours without veterinary care."

I know that an ordinance like that is open to interpretation...what is proper medical treatment in each case...etc. but if their area has a similar ordinance it might be helpful to point it out to them. In my county, you can't just let a dog succumb to pyo. I know that she is "technically" under veterinary care...but it seems like their intent is to not provide care.

Thanks Hexe, I figured that, but just thought I would throw out that it can, NOT, be that expensive...either..sounds like the Mom, just doesn't want to deal with the old age thing..so sad....Steph

This is so sad.

At this point, I don't think it is a money or old age thing with the mother. I think it is a control thing - no one is going to tell this woman what to do.

The mother could be using this to emotionally hurt her daughter Dawulf, and even Dawulf's father.

And poor Jewel will suffer in order for this woman to make her point. This woman knows exactly what she is doing, she already has a history of it.

I am going to take a break from this thread. Someone pm me if and when I can make a donation.

Thanks, Annamarie

mollyandjack, even under the NC law, Dawulf's mom couldn't be charged with failing to provide proper veterinary treatment, because they ARE providing a course of treatment as set forth by the treating veterinarian.  It's not the best course of action, granted, but the laws don't require an animal owner to select the best course, and treating a pyo is considered an acceptable option (though usually only sought by someone who wants to breed the female at a future heat--not 12 year old virgin dogs whose eggs have long since petrified to stone!).

Blitzen, you're probably right, but I can't throw in the towel yet; where there's breath, there's hope, and Dawulf's managed to force her mother into doing right by Jewel in the past, and I think she'll do it again...it just has to play itself out.

It is official! 8:30 Wednesday morning I will be driving my puppy out to that vet in Iowa to get fixed.

I'm not sure what finally convinced them (I think that vet said they need to do it ASAP), and I'm not about to ask at this point. Shades Smile Just happy she is getting it done!

She also said Jewel has been doing very well... she was rolling all around on the ground (my lil' half sister calls it 'floppy fish-ing') and has been eating her food. She has always tried to spill her food out of her dish by knocking it with her nose, and was trying to do that today, so I will take that as a good sign too! She hasn't been discharging as much, and it is no longer that ugly brown color, but more of a thick yellowish.

Thanks again everyone... Heart

This is fantastic, Dawulf!  Do you need any assistance with the vet bill or the trip expenses?
