And I agree with both of you on the points you have elaborated, commented on. DH read the entire posts Peg the original poster also asked about "good breeders" This started from that. :-)

As usual EchoMeadows, your posts are right on the mark. Your assertions about normal GSD temperament are excellent.

D.H., thanks for the information. I too believe that the "coated" GSD may soon be a separate breed. Not really a coincidence, as the coated dog was accepted in the S.V. standard for very many years. Bob-O

Thank You Preston, That's a very nice thing to say. :-)

In his book written in 1925 he states that white's are NOT to be bred for, so they've been selected against for a long time, those breeding for whites were breeding for, well whites, and breeding for color doesn't give you the best dogs, I wouldn't go out of my way to find a "good" one from a white breeder myself.

Some high drive dogs are good house dogs too. They are capable of calming down without having to be out herding sheep all day. And even a "crazy" high drive dog might be relaxing by the fire in the evening if it had been out tending sheep all day. I have a bitch pup who has torn three of my shirts with her excessive drive, and who frankly drives the amateur that I am around the crazy bend sometimes...but when she was exercised long enough through playing with many people with the tug at my club...she came home, rested with me on the couch in front of the tv, and went to sleep with her head in my lap like an angel. The fact that she sometimes drives me nuts and is difficult to have in the house because of her high drives is my own fault...she often does not get the exercise she was meant to get. I am going to get a dog sled when I can afford it, and mush my high drive adult dogs. Pulling me and a dog sled along in the snow for about ten or so miles should make up for not herding sheep all day :-) I think I will see a lot of calm happy doggie behavior coming out of it, what do you think?

Great idea Veronica. I bet your dogs will love their new "job". I have 2 that pull my daughter and her friend around on rollerblades all summer. I just know my dogs are mucho happy about doing anything outside with us. If we had snow here I would have a sled. Makes me think about when I was a kid. I'd tie my dogs to the red flyer wagon and pull my friends up and down the street. I think thats what having dogs is all about.
