They would be taking the bad guy away in a body bag!!!!!I know for sure.

My male dog would have noticed bad guy the minute he got within range of his radar (which is like maybe 10, 20 meters away). Would have started roaring. Would have jumped off the car before bad guy came close to me. I have had several close calls and he has reacted before anything has ever happened, which is why he is always on a short leash. As long as the person has "noticed" us (looking at us, walking towards us, walking funny, smells strange, etc.), he will lunge. It's not protecting me yet per se, he's just trolling for a fight. He is not a defensive dog, so he doesn't need to 'feel threatened' to bite--he lets visitors walk in without blinking. My emotional self likes to think he'll eat anyone who hurts me as he gets pissed off when people have agitated or upset me (different from his "I wanna eat you" self...in this case he'll just open his mouth and try to drag them away from me). I have no doubt he'd bite if I asked him to, but I correct him instead, he has no right to be making decisions for himself. Not a fun dog because of his short fuse, he is stable but he needs to be under obedience 100% of the time. Certainly a dog that I can completely depend on. My female would bark and lunge at the assailant while I'm being beaten, and then run off with him as soon as I'm dead. :)

It would be wonderful to think that all dogs that loved their masters would attack with a vengence and would lay their life down for us. The reality is some what less comforting. If you really want to know what he will do set up a situational. To get a real fair evaluation go to a neutral location and take your dog out and let him roam around then have the bad guy with complete hidden gear, sleeve etc. attack you. The bad guy must know what he is doing and it must be real, to the dog. In the past any protection training I did always involve senerios that took the dog completely by suprise. In the car senerio the dog will be more protective in close quarters, especially with no exit available. In most cases most dogs will not take a real bite. I have seen many police dogs that would not do the job when the chips were down. Most dogs simply do not want to put their teeth on flesh. Dogs in general are oportunists and bluffers. They will do every thing they can do to make one think they are going to tear them apart but few will actually back in up. I know this post will recieve a lot of criticism but I have experieced far too many dogs that simply could not take the stress, even though they looked like Lions on the training field. This is exactly why I prefer dogs with some sharpness and are serious about work as opposed to dogs that have merely been conditioned to do the response we want. It's apples and oranges. Sport or real in most cases. When I purchase a firearm I test it for acuracy and how much damage it will do. If I want a dog that will protect my wife and family then I test it in the most realistic manner I can. As for my own dogs, I would have to say in the case senerio given it would be a crap shoot at this point as I have not started working with them and they have not proven themselves with a bite. Like everyone else, I hope they would tear him a new.........P.S. there are those that know their dogs through and through, and if my coments were offensive, they were not intended to be so. I am just a big believer in dogs that will with out a doubt protect and situationals are the best way to find out for sure. Just like knowing my gun is loaded in a time of emergency.

Because my gsd would create such a loud noisy racket with barking before the guy was anywhere near my car, the bad guy would go attack someone else! I've heard that that is what bad guys do when they hear a loud dog.

Ok, so maybe we need to find some people to test our "thoughts" about how our dog will handle the situation? I know I would LOVE to find out. Anyone with a Bite suit near Cincinnati wanna try? I would love to video tape it, and show everyone, no matter what the end result. It could make for good laughs if he pees on himself and runs.. (although I severly doubt it) Hell, I am just looking for a good club with a helper that knows how to work a bite suit (and actually HAS one) to continue training.. Lemmie know if you wanna give it a try. He is UNTRAINED. I am curious though. I know he will bite...

My dog does not even like the husband to reach accross me to get something off the end table, hubby mach smacked my leg the other day and my boy nailed him hard, left nice bite mark, barely broke skin but he knows the hubby so I think he tries to use some restraint. I think he would definately bite, He loves mommy. But seriously he did posture one night, we had someone poking around the place and I took my boy out on lead cause no fence in the front so always use a lead, Thank GOD, cause there was the idiot and when he started to come onto the grass, My boy huffed up and growled very quietly, something I've never heard him do, he hit the end of the lead and puffed up his chest and then started barking at this guy, I told the guy to stop, I honestly think he was gonna get bit, Cause the dog was damn serious, kinda scared me some, But I was damn glad I had the dog, I don't have a clue what the nut of a guy wanted, after he stopped I told him to get on pointing the other direction. He got the drift. we have alot of crack heads, and dope dealers around here, I can't stand them !!! But don't want my dog to get poisioned from biting one eighther, LOLOLOL

both my boys would get involved, 20 month old would bite the bad man, 6 month old would bark and think it was a game. This sort of test actually happened to me some years ago, I was walking home through a woods near my house with my Schutzhund trained male then aged about 5 (him not me) when he got very antsy, his hackles went up and he began searching the bushes beside the path, he was quite serious, thinking he was just searching for a rabbit or squirrel I called him off and put his lead on. That probably saved me, I heard the next day that a rapist attacked a woman on that path ten minutes or so later and that she barely survived the ordeal. I often wonder what would have happened if I had not called my dog back, I know he certainly would have nailed the guy as he dealt with two burglars and saw them off leaving a trail of blood, and I wasn't home at the time. carol

LOL Olskool, is the only one thats even close! I have no dog that would protect me in this situation as of yet. Hopefully my little guy will be that one. 2 of my dogs I am sure would watch me go down. 1 might bark and have a hissy. 1 might turn tail and run...lol. Just becasue your dog looks or acts tough...you'd be surprised what they would really do in this situation. I total stranger assaulting you, the top dog. Think again...what would your dog do?

LOL, my Am-bred would start the car and drive away. My Czech male would tear him to shreds, hopefully I'll have the right dog w/me if it ever happens, lol.

by gsdlvr2 on 03 January 2007 - 21:01

olskoolgsds....you make some good points .IMO testing your dog like that is a necessary part of training if you want to feel secure in your dog protecting you in a real life situation. I also think this should be done more than once,at different times of day, different times of year,in the rain,in the snow,in the wind, with the bad guy in a tree,.......whatever. And with different bad guys. 4 pack,I bet your little guy will be good at that :}. He has a good pedigree and a good handler and good training coming up. And...I'm sticking with my original answer...my guy would bite the bad guy, no question.
