Slamdunc, you really should start a separate thread if you decide to brave outlining teaching the 'aus' through motivation--it would be a shame for that info to be buried in an E-collar thread.

I guess now we know why their dogs have serious civil aggression and handler hardness...
Put a zap to your %#*+ and see how "civil" you start feeling...

There is a wide spectrum of understanding of the remote collar as evidenced by many of the commentsSick.

K9ulf:

Personally I don't think you can lump all e collar users together as one. The correct use of an e collar is around the neck, thus the word collar, and if used properly it is an effective training tool for those instances where the dog's life is in jeapardy, ie. chasing cars, chasing horses, etc. In my opinion.  Now, to classify me with those that would wrap one of these things anywhere but on the neck, is a complete insult to me. I mean, come on let's be fair here.

Taken 4 days after e-collar was removed and dog treated.

When I was growing up my mother always  said  - what you do to that dog, I do to you. I soon found out what hurt. IMO e-collars used as intended have their place in the dog training world. However, they should not be available to pet owners who are the ones who seem to do the most damage with them. They consider them a teaching tool and don't understand why Rinnie, a dog that has never been taught to "come", runs away even faster when he's shocked. I don't think they should be used anywhere else other than around the neck and I don't think the dog should be wetted down prior to the correction. A trainer who needs to resort to that sort of correction, isn't much of a dog trainer. A better idea might be to breed for a dog that can be trained without physical force?

Wow, the moron that did that ought to be shot!  Angry Smile

The general public is too stupid to realize that a 9 month old bitch is capable of conceiving and having puppies.

The general public is WAY too stupid to understand the proper use of an e-collar.  Sad Smile

Maybe the sale of these things ought to require the person take a course, and get a license, the way they do with firearms here in Canada...

Thanks to those that gave a response to the original question. As for the continued debate on e-collars, please take it elsewhere....

*MODS* please lock this thread as it's no longer on topic.....

?????  you asked why a collar would be worn anywhere other than the neck.

Hexe,
I have been through it many times and I lack the drive and motivation needed to start a thread on motivationally teaching the out or the proper and humane use of the E collar.  I was just concurring with GSDsport that using the collar appropriately can achieve results.  In contrast, the improper use or improper training can cause adverse effects.

andhourspass,

Hi Eldee, I can, there is no excuse for using the e-collar. I have some very high drive dogs. We have chickens running about at times on our training field and none of our dog has really ever tried to chase them. They might look at them at times, that`s it. We train mainly without leads and of course do we never use remote trainers/ e-collars. When you think you have to use an e-collar because the dog chases live stock, then a major mistake has been made in the first place. I also went abroad with my dogs for some private training with a renowned multiple times world champion, we trained next to running about horses, no problem whatsoever. The e-collar is only used to fill gaps in the human`s knowledge. This way, the way of fear based manipulation and conditioning is used in the human world to keep us in control. That is why we think we can apply the same way to dogs to control their natural needs, but people forget that dogs as a very different species have no concept of a humans fear based obedient  behaviour .I can tell an electric trained dog from a mile, many people do not even tell from close distance, judges included, because of the way themselves have been conditioned.
All the best
Ulf
