Nice post, Ziegenfarm.  When I got my first purebred in 69, I was given a very good piece of advice - any fool can fault a dog, it takes no thought or skill whatsoever.

by Blitzen on 23 June 2013 - 18:06

One of the most physically correct GSD's I've ever seen was a black sable working line (Czech?) used at a trial as the demo dog.

by Paul Garrison on 23 June 2013 - 22:06

Why does this type thread ALWAYS have to lead to bashing show line dogs?

Because they are way off track as far as protection dogs go.

Don't you think there are any show lines that work as well as that bitch, Paul?

No..  Not the total package, but there are working lines that do.
I have not found a show line that could produce real and constant protection dogs, low level sport dogs yes, real working dog no. they are few and far between.

I owned the V15 dog in Bakersfield Ca in 97 or 98 beautiful dog SCH III 13 times average score 271. Wonderful dog, lot of fun, NOT A PROTECTION DOG. Silvo vom Kirschental SchH3  Kkl1

Blitzen chill out a bit, and see it for what it is. My point is the GSD is digressing not improving. Seffe was both a great dog structurally and working. We should be producing dog at least this good, but we are not on both sides. How do you think she would line up in a show ring today? It would be way down the list and that is because they are NOT looking for the total dog.

V Pirry vom Elfenschloß SchH 3 Kkl 1

Beautiful dog ( not nearly as pretty as Silvo)  Hard, natural aggression, serious man stopper a real protection dog. He was what he was bred to be.

There needs to be a balance between work and show and in my opinion the show dogs need to start over and go back to the basic primus of the total dog, A balanced protection dog.

Now on the other side of the coin you also have these prey monger sport dogs that are neither pretty or protection dogs and they need to start over with the primus of the total dog as well.

SO BLITZEN get on the band wagon of breeding and raising USEFUL GSD as they were intended.

When someone breeds "show lines" to "working lines"  you are mixing gold and shit (you pick which is gold and which is shit) all you end up with is shit.

It's impossible to have a constructive discussion with you, Garrison. You know it all. BTW I have never bred a litter of GSD's and have no intentions of doing so, so your smart ass remarks about breeding working x show doesn't apply to me.

I've always hated that quote, Paul!  Yup, pick which one you think is shit... Sad Smile

It's one of those things that points out just how wrong things have gone with the breeding of GSDs. It's right up there with the time Koos Hassing asked the president of the SV (forget who it was at the time) when a sable GSD was going to chosen as Sieger.

"Not as long as I'm president!" was the response.

I liked Seffe a lot too and a lot of the older dogs.
I don't necessarily believe that breedng sl to wl is like shit to gold. Here Paul we must disagree. But if you've not done your homework, yep they'll be mediocre dogs. I had one, pure german and she was mediocre. I loved her and some things she was great at but neither structure or health was one of them. But now regarding our mutts thy work--they might not be the kind of hard as nails dogs like you like Paul......but the work at sevice, SAR, drug dogs and my goal is to make sure it stays that way--nah--I want improvement............

That was very restrained, Vonissk ! Wink Smile

BTW - I do so hate to rain on anyone's parade ...
but those of us who have been on the planet long
enough recall SEFFE as maybe not the 'ultimate' but
as a successful [German] animal;   in 'her time'  [the
mid to late 60s] regarded as an all-round GSD, but on
the SL rather than working-as-in-HERDING side of the
breed.  Which was at that time the 'norm',  without all
the polarisation of SL v WL we have today.
And she was [perhaps unsurprisingly] black & gold.
Also at that time, rather less attention was paid to hips
than it is today - not sure how she would have faired on
that point, now.

Good goal, Vonissk!!!

by eddyelevation on 24 June 2013 - 11:06

i would like for others to post what are their favorites of the breed or what they consider an "ultimate" GSD.

in the end we all have our own preferences but by seeing other peoples post we discover without a doubt more great GSD's.

Get a life, Eddy. You couldn't care less what anyone here thinks about dogs. Your only goal is to stir the pot.
