Okay, I have been meaning to bring this up for some time but have friends on here that are women and have been, well, "chicken". But it's Sunday, raining and I am bored, so here goes. In Capt. Max v. Stephanitz' book, "The German Shephard Dog in Word and Picture", he states quit directly that (taking a deep breath, okay here goes), he states that in a home that is shared with a GSD and a man and woman with children, the GSD will always assume that the man is the leader of the pack and will always not hold the women nor children in the highest place of honor and respect. Stephanitz states that this is the case with both male and female dogs but is expecially the case with female dogs. He, in fact, states that it is his belief that it is based on the matter of sex. Dogs know our sexes and have through their millions of years of evolution always given the highest place of honor and respect to a dominant male, and that this has carried over to his human family. He states that in the absence of a male in the family, a human female master can attain this highest stature. It is stated that children will be tolerated very well and protected, because of the dogs knowledge that they are important to his supreme master (the man in the house), but that the man in the house will "almost" always be the leader of the pack. I know that there will be many individual stories about husbands that will go against this, but as a "generalization", do ya'll find this more or less correct, from your experiences? Personally, in my household, of eight dogs, seven hold me in the highest and one perhaps has me tied with my wife, and we both share the "chores" of taking care of them and both adore them ( I do the bulk of the chores and time spent with them though). Okay, lets see the fireworks :)

I am male and without a doubt all of our dogs reckonized myself as the leader. Even when my wife and kids trained a dog it still answered to me if I was atound. Interesting point and I don't find it rude or insulting.

My husband does nothing with the dogs except love on them so no, they do not listen to him nor respect him. My bitch won't even really let him into the whelping room right now. I don't believe dogs know the sexes but they do know who feeds them, works with them and praises them for a job well done. Of course we occasionally have to kick their butts too but that just seems to firm up their opinion of who's the leader of the household.

My husband has nothing to do with the dogs, so there fore they will not listen to him. I do all the training and feeding and clean up myself, and they do listen to me. Male or females, they all listen to me.

MI GSD, just to clarify your response. You state that "we" sometimes have to kick their butts", does the "we" inslude the husband. If so, I find it strange that they "do not listen to him nor respect him". It would make sense I guess, if he is not included in the "we".

by MI__GSD on 15 January 2007 - 02:01

I meant "we" as in the leaders of the household:)

I think it is well worth noting that in the day of Max Stephanitz, women most likely held much less liberated and dominant roles, most staying home all day and then waiting on the husband when he arrived home. I'll bet the husband was served first at dinner, as the alpha male would in a pack. I'll bet the dogs picked up on the pack order.

No,,, i think it has to do with who spends more time with them and asserts themself as the alpha. male or female, if you show the dog who is in charge, that is the person they will respect. could go on about our dogs being mine or hers, but wont. john

My male thought one of my daughters was an air head, and would not allow her to anwser the door alone, and if they did not come in right away, you would hear him roar. After the door was shut and they left, I swear you could see him laughing. My female would never listen to my husband. She will try and bully him. My male will listen only at dinner time. I am boss thru and thru, but to be fair, I am the one who spends the time and works with them.
