In the HGH trial a dog can lose up to 8 points for not gripping the sheep. So yes the grip is important in herding too. GSDs are not a breed that works with eye, that is border collies and similar breeds.

Elaborate on grip .. biting into the sheep or holding by the skin and wool??  I had sheep and I also had GSD and there was definitely eye contact involved.  Sheep have tender hides and if a dog sinks his teeth into them they can rip a huge chunk of skin loose .. biting into the sheep is definitely not something the sheep or the sheep rancher wants because they will go crazy and hurt themselves and others climbing and jumping to get away plus lost quality plus costs for repairing the damage if serious.  What the dog does in HGH is not like biting a jute sleeve in protection.

For the grip to have the desired effect it must be a quick, full mouth grip exerting adequate pressure for only a short time. Gripping too often and unnecessarily are faults.

The HGH must move along with the sheep while gripping; he is not allowed to tear at the sheep; damage to the sheep ought not happen.

The AWDF featured a USCA helper who fed the sleeve to Okane's dog quite clearly on the Shellshot's video while giving Ivan's dog Ebor a low to high quick turn presentation and nearly making the dog miss completely.  Ivan and Ebor had the AWDF won and they were the class of the event but he dropped from first to 5th with the "unfortunate" helper work.  The USCA competitors at the AWDF moved up one place each with Okane getting first instead of second.  However Karma is a bitch and without Balabanov and Ebor the USA FCI team finished second and seven points out of the money .. seven points Balabanov and Ebor could have picked up but he wasn't there because he got the shaft at the AWDF.

I will take exception:

I happen to have the pleasure of training with several members of the world team and i guarantee you neither of them bought push button dogs. Those dogs have had a lot of hard work and training put into them with hours and hours on the field with meticulous work to get to there respective achievements and for  your self to degrade there accomplishments is reprehensible!!.  You need to either put up or shut up!  Lets see your accomplishments? You run your mouth but I believe you have probably never done a thing with your dogs.

As far as police dogs and Schutzhund training.I,ve donate two dogs (bred by me with my own male and female that I raised from pups) to police programs both at or around 2 years of age.The only complaint that I ever got was that they were going to have to break my Schutzhund habits in tracking. They were always happy with the obedience and bite work the dogs had been worked into from Schutzhund.

Prove you have some type of stones at all and let us know who you are and what your accomplishments are so we can judge others by your worldly accomplishments!

Making eye contact with the livestock does not mean it is eye herding. This website explains the different types well.

.. you didn't answer the question about the USCA members buying dogs in Europe for their competition dogs.  They buy proven dogs with titles and championships already and then the USCA brags about being the guardian of the GSD in the United States.  The fact is that the USCA hasn't produced any dogs worthy of world competition in 30 years of bluster and brag.  They buy the dogs in Europe almost exclusively.  Personally I don't care what the USCA does internally .. they can kill and eat each other if they want.  What I do care about is that the cheating and lies against the other GSD organizations hurts all GSD owners in the USA.  The USCA's behavior toward the GSDCA and the GSDCA-WDA as well as the 3.49 million GSD owners who own their own special dog that doesn't do IPO is not to be tolerated.  If the USCA wants to live in a mud hut and rule their little kingdom fine but when you make war on neighboring kingdoms then expect the same in return.  Despite all the BS from the usual BS artists I do have several GSD and I have work to do with and for them so I am signing off for now.  The membership of the USCA seems to condone and even enjoy the lies and cheating as well as the bad behavior toward the GSDCA and the GSDCA-WDA.  If that's what they want then so be it just leave things as they are.  In ten years or more of trying to destroy the GSDCA-WDA little has changed except both organizations are smaller by the same percentage.   Keep it up and in 2023 the GSDCA-WDA will have 800 members and the USCA will have 1800 as both clubs age out with few new recruits.  It's not much fun participating if you know the game is rigged so keep up the cheating and lies and enjoy the ride to the bottom.  Gone for now!!
