If vets made 40-50% profits on selling raw dogfood onsite (have to have a pretty big freezer in the back), they'd be promoting it. I used to be that naive person who would buy dogfood just because my vet told me to until my show dog almost wittled down to nothing on some overpriced IVD junk. Vets are also being "mass hypnotized" by the $$$$ they can get from Science Diet, etc. I'll do my own research and observe my dog. My dog has never looked better.

and I'm not arguing with you guys, don't take it that way, Was just saying Uvar's statement about slaughter house Kill floor are correct. I personally love Diamond, Eukanuba and Iams mixed together is what we feed as a kibble. Have no problems, no allergies, digestion issues, loose stool, ect. ect. So am gonna stick with what my dogs like, do well on, and what I like the results of. AS Should we ALL, I'm not telling anyone to feed the way I do, and am not telling anyone they are right or wrong. Everyone has they're prefferences. and should be allowed.

We feed all of our dogs a BARF Diet that we make ourselves (posted below). Those we don't feed homemade, or when we run out of homemade, we feed EMBARK made by the honest kitchen. It is a dehydrated raw food that the dogs do excellent on. If beef has been previously frozen below 0*F it is my understanding that it kills Neosopra discussed above. A great article to read about what is really in commercial dog food can be found here: http://www.api4animals.org/facts.php?p=359&more=1 For EMBARK info you can go here: https://thehoat.secured-ecommerce.net/index.htm

BARF DIET WE FEED: 15 pounds raw hamburger meat, I use 27% fat 1 lg. box of Total cereal (2lbs) 1 lg. box oatmeal (uncooked) 1 small jar/bag of wheat germ 1 1/4 cup veg oil 1 1/2 cup of unsulfured molasses 18 raw eggs AND shells 12 envelopes of Knox Joint Gelatin (or regular unflavored if preferred) 2 tsp of salt 2 tsp of garlic 3/4 cup flaxseed oil 2 cup grated carrots 2 cup canned Pumpkin Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf. Divide into freezer bags, about 1 lb each and freeze. Thaw and feed raw. I add a heaping spoonful of cottage cheese and/or vanilla yogurt (with live cultures) when I feed it. Once in a while I will substitute a couple pounds of raw ground turkey for hamburger, or a pound or two of raw chopped liver for hamburger. To add variety a RAW chicken leg, thigh, or wing is good to given, boneand all. I do this once or twice a week. Large RAW beef bones are given at least twice a week every week. Make sure all meat and bones have been frozen before feeding.

I like ur diet......Kaykohl.....Key word frozen.....

by Blitzen on 22 January 2007 - 16:01

I like that diet too and am thinking about trying it (for Blitz, not me LOL). A few questions - any additional vitamins, minerals, etc needed? Also do you feed knuckle bones only? Thanks!!

I do not supplement with any additional vitamins. I haven't seen any need to. I feed an assortment of Raw previously FROZEN bones. We have a great local butcher just minutes down the road. A few things to think about..... *Do you ever wonder why our grandparent’s dog/cat lived so long without health problems, being fed mainly good leftovers? What did pets eat before kibble? *Do animals in a zoo eat kibble? Is their food cooked or highly processed at high temperatures? *Do animals in the wild or people eat a balanced meal every day? Why must dogs have perfectly balanced meals every day? *If you are able to properly feed you and your family, why are we led to believe you need a PHD to feed your pet, and what are all those “big words” on the kibble packages? *Why are there so many teeth cleaning products for pets if kibble is designed to keep teeth clean? Dog/cat teeth are designed to rip/tear meat and bones. *Why are so many dog/cats developing cancer, kidney disease, allergies, yeast and ear infections? *Why are so many over or underweight? Could this be diet related? *What is in kibble that allows it to have a shelf life for 6 months to a year in a bag where not even bacteria can grow? How can this be good? *How can a pet food product be “Holistic” or “Natural” if it has been processed at high temperatures with additives and preservatives in it? "Natural" means fresh food from the garden, uncooked, unprocessed, no preservatives colouring or chemicals……Real Food! *Not one animal on earth is adapted by evolution to eat a cooked food diet. *Number two on the list of the fastest growing issues in pet health is cancer. Chemical preservatives are believed by many people (in the pet food industry as well as vets and breeders) to be a major contributing factor to the rise in cancer rates. Most of the chemical preservatives (petroleum-based) used by kibbled dog food companies are on the list of known carcinogens. A German Shepherd eating a kibbled food with chemical preservatives could eat as much as 20lbs or more of those chemicals per year!

I've always had a strong desire to feed raw. I tried it twice, the first time he vomited bone chards from chicken wings which scared me. Then I bought an electric grinder and ground up chicken wings and backs. My kitchen looked like a butcher shop, blood flew everywhere, and I practically had to suit up in a raincoat, so I didn't do that for very long. Blitz, however, did love the food. He can be picky if I allow it, but he never turned up his nose at a raw meal (other than liver, not his favorite, mine either). The recipe you have posted really appeals to me since it doesn't require grinding (LOL, I'll never do that again) and I learned that he does a lot better with turkey wings and backs rather than chicken. I also give him raw meaty bones now and then, he really likes the beef rib bones. I have not made sure the bones were first frozen, thanks too for that information. He is now eating RC GSD food with a little raw ground turkey or beef and gets a raw turkey wing, back or neck now and then. So, when we get close to finishing off the new bag of RC, I'm going to start to mix in this recipe and see how it goes. Thanks for posting it. May I ask how long you have fed this to your GSD's. Also, how many times per day do you feed and approximately how much for a 97 lb couch potato, your best guess, I know that will vary. Thanks so much.

From Uvar: "animules: We are all aware of why you are making the comment about Eukanuba..." Uvar, I am totally confused what you meant by this. I was just going by previous posts. I did a search here and there were many comments made regarding the quality had gone down, that is all I was conveying. I have nothing specific against Eukanuba nor do we feed a raw diet. I did not mean to cause any confussion.

Kaykohl, Just out of curiosity, is there a specific reason you put cereal in the mix? I have been feeding raw for a while now and have never found a reason to do so.never thought of it...I am considering trying it, but just wanted to ask..thanks! Andrea
