Electrolux -Spendy but worth it- I have had the canister since 2000 and it is a great vacum, I tried a dyson at my friends house and was not impressed. I have taken it to the shop 1X since my daughter did something and one of the parts broke but after 7 years of use the $35 repair was money well spent.

I bought mine on QVC one day after watching it suck a bowling ball and hold it in the air..... That was a really eye opener.

I liked the Dyson and almost bought one UNTIL I saw the Rainbow Vaccum!  The Rainbow has it beat!  It is the best I have ever seen.  It uses water as a filter and It doesn't loose suction.  Not only does it suck but you can reverse it to blow too.  OH, and not to mention you can get the attachment to use it as a carpet cleaner.   Love it, love it, love it!  With 14 dogs, and a husband who makes more of a mess than all the dogs, and living in the country with all the dust and mud, I'll never own another kind.

DYSON DC 17 AND 23 ARE THE BEST

by hodie on 01 February 2008 - 22:02

Despite the comments I made about the Dyson a year ago above, the Dyson is far superior to anything I have ever owned. All the ergonomic issues with it still bug me, but the real issue at the most basic level is that I have dog fur and sand everywhere and it cleans it up very well. Just imagine however, that with enough dogs, as I have here, one ends up emptying it several times to clean a large room.....But that is better than always having to buy stupid bags, most of which were not worth a darn.

Dyson is my vote still.

I've gotta chime in on this one. My husband and I actually met because of Rainbow and German Shepherds! We owned a distributorship for years for Rainbow and sold for years as well. There is absolutely nothing out there that can compare to the Rainbow. If I had a nickel for every time I have said "How can people with animals and kids in the house live without a Rainbow?" I would be a millionaire!!!

I am not a distributor any longer so this is not a sales pitch! I have been in literally hundred and hundreds of homes doing demonstrations of the Rainbow and 1 out 2 people who saw it work in their home shelled out $1,600.00 + on the spot and never regretted the decision. The versitility can not be beat period as well as effectiveness.

What do you do when that adorable litter pees on your floor, or pukes in your car on the way to the vet or somebody isn't potty trained yet?  You do the "dab it up mess dance' on a towel and pray that you get most of it up. But you never do. Pull out your Rainbow that sucks up yuck, puke , water ,hair and whatever else the kids (furry or human) can spill and dump it outside and then you can even shampoo with it. It is a GODSEND if you have pets. There is enough a "pet brush attachment' Yellowrose do you have that? The dogs love it. You can also buy larger basins to fit the same unit for large messes or larger homes without having to change the water.

Heres' a story that attests to the power of the water. We moved into a home in the winter (rental) formerly occupied by a cat fancier. Bad smell and come to find out FLEAS. Well we Rainbowed and cleaned the carpet turned on the Rainbow with scents in to neutralize the odors and things got back to normal. But the dogs kept itching and had fleas on them. Not fans of chemicals we called in a Flea guy to examine the house. He searched with a fine tooth comb COULD NOT find a single flea, flea egg , nothing in the carpet or home. He went to the back yard a there they were!! So whenever the dogs went out the fleas jumped on them. He said I sure would like to make some money here but there is nothing I can do in your home no fleas to kill "WHAT do you use to vacuum your home with?""he asks A RAINBOW we say and he went OH yeah any fleas /eggs get drawn and DROWN in the water. The Rainbows are the best" he says.

I could tell you a million stories from all my experiences with Rainbows in homes but let me just say, GET ONE

The ideal remedy to the dog hair problem.  First a good brushing with the Furminator (LOVE this brush, eveyone with a GSD should be required to own one) lol  Next the DYSON- this was the best $500 I ever spent in my life.  Careful though, it has enough power force behind it that you might accidently suck up one of the kids. lol

You're right, if you not using Dyson then you have never vacuum before, and if you haven't using the Furminator, then you have never comp your dog, just one stroke, furminator took out all the dead hair.

best of both world

We have a Dirt Devil for pets, it cost $80 and i can not believe how good it works, esp. with it costing under 100!  I have 3 GSDs and two cats and it works great!

The Miele works well, but in my experience, the Royal works best -- the moving parts are all metal --

BUT I think all GSD lovers need to keep housekeeping concerns in perspective.  Last December, prior to our annual Christmas party, I asked my long-suffering, patient husband to clean ALL the noseprints off our windows.  We lost our much loved GSD, "Tugboat," on January 7 -- what I would have given to have those noseprints back!  Our house was clean, but sterile and very lonely, until "Radar" came to us in March!  I still vacuum, and clean my windows, more often than a "normal" person would, but still count each dog hair, and each nose print on the window, as a blessing!

Damn you guys!! I burned my broccolli on account of this thread! PEEYEEEWW, what a stink!

ARRRGggg!!

I'm curious to know what order Consumer Reports rated the vacuums in. And did they mention Filter Queen by any chance?

I have an el cheapo Dirt Devil that works really well, but the attachment hose is too short for getting into tight spaces under furniture where the REALLY BIG mounds of hair tend to hide.  Also, it needs emptying fairly often, and the filter has to be cleaned by banging it against something, which is very messy and disgusting. The filters for this model are hard to find, too, which is most likely why I got it so cheap.

Prior to that, I used my Filter Queen, but it stopped picking up hair off of rugs. I could probably fix it by having it cleaned and serviced, but really wonder if it's worth the price.
