We just picked up our 1/2 of steer/cow,,,We requested the bones and anything left over as a thought I might try giving Prince raw bones to chew,,.It consists of about 30# of a variety of bones and a beef heart,,I gave Prince a large bone and he was in heaven!!,,He was carrying it all over the yard while he played ,,At one point I touched the bone with my shoe and needless to say he growled!,,He did not attempt to bite me,He just didn't want me to have it..,I don't want to be a situation where I can not safely take it from him if it should become necessary...How do your dogs behave with bones?...Prince has never been aggressive with food or toys in the past,,Any suggestions what else to do with the bones?..and heart?....

Hubby says give him the bone and leave him alone!! He will be fine!..Thinking...

I don't give my dogs beef bones anymore,
because they can snap of a dogs teeth.
I happened to a couple of my dogs.

Gouda, where the bones you gave cooked or raw?...

by Nans gsd on 23 November 2013 - 17:11

Only give raw bones and YES my Sammy bitch tried that with me about a year ago and that was the last time she EVER growled at me.  My sister gave me an article about bone(s) and dogs and apparently bones are like the very special prize for the dogs, I will see if I can send you the article and how to deal with a dog that growls when you try to get it from them.  I just remove my dogs now and then go get the bone and get rid of it after a day of chewing.  BUT very important to only give raw bones.  Even the ones that are in the pet stores that are smoked splinter,  I dropped one of those and it shattered.  Soooo,  I give leg bones whole and let them knaw then remove and toss in the trash.

Did you touch the bone with your shoe on purpose? To knock it away or accidentally hit it?

by Blitzen on 23 November 2013 - 17:11

This is off topic, sorry - how is Prince doing since his latest rehab gig? I haven't read anything about him in a long time.

I don't think dogs should be scolded for not wanting to give up a prized bone. I have not a clue if my GSD would growl at me or not, I've never challenged her. If I want her not to have something, I just call her away, put her on a platz and take it. Geez, dogs deserve some respect too.

I wouldn't tolerate my dogs growling at me for any reason. Anyone in my family can take anything out of any of my dog's mouths without them getting an attitude.. I'd work on a leave it command, because what if you had to take something away? You wouldn't want to get bit by your own dog. I can't have that behavior, from any of my animals, horses included, because I always have a yard full of kids running around. I can't chance one of my horses kicking out, or my dogs snapping on someone, so I am very strict on them about being disrespectful. I'd basically feel like my dog was saying a big Forget you (nicer term lol). I'd take the bones away until he learns a good leave it command. Just removing the bones for ever isn't a good option, because he could find anything to become possessive of.

Bee,Me and Prince play a game where he holds one ball in his mouth and I kick a second ball. He runs over to the kicked ball bites it and I kick the one he drops,,,This time the ball he dropped was the bone and when I went to kick it ( i was curious how he would behave ) he got snarly..

Nan,,After Prince got snarly I pretended I didn't notice as I was not in a position to address it and was not sure of the best way to address it,,After about 10 seconds he dropped it and I pulled him away from it and we put it away..Poor guy he tracked the whole yard looking for it !!...I am not condoning his growling, but it was an excitable snarly growl ,,,I know he was jubilant and I was interfering in his fun,,

Blitzen,,Prince is doing fantastic,Thanks for asking,,;;:)

Erin,,Yeah, in a perfect world it would be that way here too, but it has not been that easy for me..Not with Prince and not with my horses either,,lol,,,Prince is very good about the drop it and leave it command,,I have never tried it out on something as prized as a raw bone, but I am curious..

Thanks..:)

Ruger,

I think your timing for the temperament type dog you have, is wrong. This was not the time to address that issue, as it was a first time special event for him? Plus you are confusing the issue of game with a pack order issue. Something like that. I'll let the experts weigh in. But in this exact case and moment in time, your husband had the right idea.

If it is something you want to work on, waiting the next day and doing things with the "spent" bone will not have the impact that first fresh treat was to Prince. IMHO.

You need to keep it simple and exactingly clear for the boy.

Edited: I think he needs to see you as fair! Making his meal a game is not fair to him... that idea just came to me but I think it fits.
