Smiley says "I am going to go out on a limb and say most IPO clubs are like the ones I trained with...and.....that just sucks."

Yup your out on a limb, In my region there are 22 clubs and none are like the ones you described...... I would never judge a big group of people by only 3 or 4 groups I have seen...But that's just me...

Thanks Steve, he should be out on the competition field this year......The hood is a training secret  LOL

I would say Smiley has summed up the IPO club scene very well and the observations made by Smiley are applicable to the majority of IPO clubs.

And just which IPO club or clubs have you belonged to? How many "Hard Candie" dogs have you titled in said clubs?

by Kevin Nance on 04 February 2014 - 22:02

Bubba,

And you've titled how many dogs before submitting that authoritative (dismissive) conclusion?

And, the lineage of your current dogs came from the IPO ranks; so do most GSDs doing police, KNPV, search and rescue, detection, etc....; yet you loath it so.

And, 5 bites a dog demonstrates in an IPO protection routine AFTER tracking and obedience; yet all IPO is dismissed by you as nothing more than a "bite sport."

Very "interesting" perspectives you share....

We'll hell, there ya go, right from an expert.  He should know, he certainly has his finger on the pulse of the National and International IPO community right from behind that computer keyboard.

Schznd:

My father told me long ago that the definition of and "Expert" is as follows. An "Ex" is a has been and a "Speret"  is a drip under pressure so Yes i,d say it fits to the T!

Unknown....phew!! That is so good to know that I was wrong about IPO clubs!! It's such a small world in my area where everyone knows everyone so I just assumed!! My bad!!!  I will keep plugging. I got my USCA scorebook and will keep plugging...it's all I can do!  Trust me..I would have quit a long time ago with all the crap I have been through but I like IPO. Here, the IPO clubs are so selective and give you the "you don't belong here vibe" if your dog is not from a well known kennel or they don't know you. Another girl started about the same time I did, and she told me the exact same thing and had the exact same experience. Maybe...we are just unlucky. Sad Smile

The thing with IPO.... the club people control the sport and who has access to it. I have NEVER seen anything like it. With any other venue, anyone can try. But, with IPO you have to jump through hoops and kiss butt just to be allowed to train with an offshoot club training group..let alone actually have access to club membership. So, for $260 a month, I have the privelege of training once a week with the offshoot IPO club people but can't join the club and can get kicked out at anytime. Yay me. Just weird!!!

But, I am still trying to do IPO and support USCA......Plus, I very much like that magazine I get!

Sarah,

I have also left clubs previously and even moved my household to find a club situation and personalities that "fit.". That  is fair and nobody need be made at fault because personalities did not mesh.

I had the luxury that most do not of being able to relocate my household and continue my passion.  It further helped that we are empty nest and my wife shares the passion for our sport.  Had I not had that ability, I certainly would not have continued.

I certainly hope you find your niche and a comfortable group to train with in your area. Your girl sounds very nice!

And, so do you.   :)

Warmest regards,

Kevin Nance

Kevin,

Thank you! We will keep trying!! As I said, the new group I found...they are SERIOUS competitors but are supportive and encouraging of me so far- even though I don't want to use prong or e-collar like them. I was lucky to fall into the group as it was froma previous Mondio group connection.  Mals are insane. Ok..that sums up my Mondio experience!! hehehe  The new group have been very kind. They are not really connected with clubs but just come together to work with this one trainer. I was just curious if it was possible to continue to train without using the prong/ecollar methods...I mean...if people are actually successful in terms of passing IPO levels. I appreciate everyone's comments!  I have a lot to learn!!!

Sarah
