Hi,

My dog is 4 years old. He has been with me since he came from Germany at 8 weeks. I let him in the back yard as always and when I went to get him, he was prancing in the neighbors yard who has a 4ft chain link fenced yard, just like mine. If he had jumped out the other side, he would be gone. He did not dig. He had to jump over. So how do I keep him from doing it again. My first thought is the e collar. He has matured so much and his drive is higher than 2 years ago.

He is the best dog and a big baby. Balko von der knapphohe.

Thanks

Put hot wire on top of your fence. When he puts bis front feet up, he'll get zapped and not do it again. E collar, you have to catch him every time he tries the fence...usually not effective. You can go to feed store or tractor supply to get fence charger ( the solar powered are great if electrical outlet  not close by and they are safe), wire and insulators. Inexpensive way to keep your dog inside the fence.

By the way, a four foot fence is not sufficient for a gsd, I have some who won't stay inside a six foot fence.

Thank you

You might be able to keep your four foot fence, if it us reinforced by an e-fence. Depends where you live and the dog. If a live wire strung along the top is not optimal for your setting.

I love mine, however they are not too popular with many folks on here. It all depends on your variables.

First of all , find out WHY he jumped over after all these years of not doing it...I would never trust any of my gsd in a 4 ft fence.

and if you hot wire the top, what do you do if an old lady or a child gets bit????? or should I say Zapped?

Find out what got his interest up:? first before you go spending money.

Paul:  I take my question back as to WHY//or what?  I looked at your dogs pedigree'''Enough said...he is a high prey workaholic dog...if he follows all the great lineup in his first three or 4 generatiosn.. A BANDIT   alone , progheny and he has Greif kicking the cans...so your dog is gonna now start his new adventure...anything that moves.....GEEZHAM   he will now be over the fence...Korbelbach is the TYRANT of all /// Bear Jerome would go after every skunk, kitten or any thing that moved.. I had to bond him to me like a magnet and rearrange his expectations . HE never jumped the fencing I had but I had 3 acres fenced so he had plenty of room and no neighbors...just deer etc.  Never left him outside if I was not home./

and my concrete kennels had tops on them..I used the welded wire from Tractor supply panels that were 3 or 4 inch , cut and tacked to top of all kennels...under roof with lights and fans...hIGH PREY WORKING  gsd are not to ever be left to use REASONING about jumping a fence. And you won't get any advice to ZAP any of my gsd or yours either..Training our gsd of your quality of dog would never get an electrical shock for any reason. HE might get his Come to Jesus meeting from me ,but we retrain not "electricute the gene we want our dogs to have"

PUT up you own fenced playground for him...on the other side of yard now that he broke that barrier...do not know your arrangements so cannot further advise..

I am still assuming that he jumped the fence. He has displayed increased drive to chase cats and rabbits. Recently a rabbit has been under the shed. I never leave him out when I am away. I had a dog with more drive than Balko. Chukkie von Linienbach. OMG!  Anyway,, .I will go back to feeding him out back. He's very food motivated. I make him sitz. As soon as I get eye contact, I give him the okay to eat. If that rabbit has any sense he will be gone by then.My neighbor likes Balko and talks to him. Balko tries to get his attention when I am not out there. Also will check with s contractor abt a 6 ft wooden fence.

He is great with obedience on the training field but when we get home, it's like he has never been trained.

I will have to also spend more time in the back exercising him. I think he is thinking he is alpha in the backyard. We will change that.

Thanks,

Paul

An easy solution is to not put your dog out in the yard, unless you  are out with him. If you need to put him out unsupervised then think about investing in a dog kennel with a top for those occassions.

That's what I am thinking.Thanks
