This is a forum for people who like dogs, that said all of us do share the same hobby, first and foremost we are dog owners...
but in some things we differ from each other:

Some of us

  • own ASL,
  • own GSL,
  • own WL, be it East or West
  • are breeders
  • are normal  people owning one or two dogs
  • are brokers
  • are "professional" trainers
  • like IPO
  • like shows
  • believe in PP
  • must be able to depend on their dog because of their job
  • .....

but all of us started at one point, we got our first dog, and we fell in love with "our" breed, no matter which breed, no matter which line.
For quite some time I am reading about insults, vilifications, and personal offences day after day. Why the heck???

I grew up learning I have to respect people and people´s opinions. I don´t need to share their view, but I need to respect and tolerate them.
Right now there is no respect, and there is no tolerance at all.
We are talking about DOGS, we are not talking about war, religion, or survival, we are just talking about dogs...
Our life doesn´t change only because X doesn´t believe in the same goals as Y, or Z trains different than A.

All that matters is that the dogs we are responsible for, are well cared for, not more, not less.
At least I am here because I love dogs, but I´m not here to blame people who train, raise, or handle different...

It´s depressing...

That is Soo True Susie.....

Tolerance has vanished I dont know where and I have seen this recently too, in about every Forum. I am new but encountered this Bashing over one anothers opnions or style of traing/keping etc recently. It was there but not in this way and this quantity... Its Like WARRR.....

Cool Off People.... Live and Let Live....

There is an unfortunate motivation for some individuals to denounce and ridicule others who they perceive as competition or a threat...as though if they can successfully discredit their perceived competition, their life will improve. It is very tiresome to encounter such posts rather than to be able to have peaceful discussions.

Joanro, you know I´m the first jumping into a good discussion, but what´s going on right now, is violating. Several members crossed a boarder.

I think for many its because when typing on the computer they don't have to interact with others face to face.  When in a group many wouldn't even imagine to act in such a way.  There are a few who have just outright abrasive personalities.  A certain amount is just ego and some is upbringing.  Regardless of the reasons doesn't make it any easier to tolerate.  I see a big difference between being Politically correct and being Rude.  There is also a difference between being blunt and being rude.  I think we live in a society that tries to be so politically correct that they have become tolerant of behavior that several decades back would never have been tolerated.

Susie is right.       Except in one regard :

We CAN talk about war, religion, survival, economics, environmental issues ...

we have the Off Topic Forum.   [As some offenders already know !]    If you want to

chuck insults etc around, and simply MUST use PDB to do it, at least take it

over to OT and don't do it in the dog related Forums, even if that means rephrasing

what you are proclaiming,  to make it fit without mentioning D O G s.  There is also

the Personal Message system, where you CAN mention dogs too.  But that's not

public;  and folks can block you if they weary of your talking to them as if they are

dirt.                  So Joan and Reggie are right, also.

Fewer people seem to be using the Board at present.  I suspect all the demeaning

remarks are at least part of the reason why.  You can say YOU think someone is

wrong about something dog-related without being downright rude to them.  (I should

know ...).

It seems the whole world has gone mad of late....this forum was an oasis of civility & commonality, with a few notable exceptions. Ok, we had some very spirited discussions! I even remember someone making a little cartoon to describe their superior dog handling skills. But there was always a feeling that it was good hearted, not personal. Now it seems personal. Not just calling a dog cow-hocked, but but calling the handler or owner names too.

We are a world wide community. The fact that we can have civilized discourse is a small miracle...please, please keep it going! Sounds goofy, I know; but as long as this forum continues with our love of dogs as it's focus---I have hope for the rest of the world.

this forum was an oasis of civility & commonality....

Well, no. I don't want to dig up old wars and old garbage, but this forum has ALWAYS had its bad moments. That's the reason Oli had to start using moderators to restore some sanity and civility. I do admit things have been going fairly well since then, and there have been some wonderful discussions. But an oasis of civility...never! Many good people have been driven away from here in the past by personal attacks, the ignorance and the LACK of civility! I have seen extremely knowledgeable people treated with such rudeness that they left and never came back.

I myself have been treated so badly I swore I was going to do the same.

I've been accused of being kennel blind. (Excuse me? I've never even BRED a litter!)

I've had my dog called a P.O.S.

I've been raked over the coals numerous times, and told I know nothing because my dogs don't have a string of fancy titles after their names. There are reasons for that, such as most of my dogs have been rescues with no pedigrees. I would rather save a dog's life than put a fancy title on it, then breed it to produce more dogs that may wind up in the shelters. And, oh, yes, I run a boarding and grooming kennel for a living. I run it ALONE and find it very difficult to get away to dog shows on the weekends, which are the busiest times for the kennel!

One thing I've learned, and would like to pass on. We don't know who's behind a particular screen name. The GSD world isn't all that big. Be careful what you say to someone. They could be the breeder your dog came from. They could be the judge who's going to evaluate your dog at your next trial, or the person who's going to be competing in the ring with you.

Louis Donald posts here sometimes. He's the former president of the German Shepherd Dog Club of Australia. I've also seen post from many well-known judges and breeders, people who've been involved with the GSD longer than I've been alive, and I'm no spring chicken!  (Morton Goldfarb and Fred Lanting [Mr. GSD]  to name just two of the better-known names).  These people deserve our respect for what they have done for the breed.

Respect shown to someone will earn you respect in return. Even if you know things about that person that make you think less of them, you can still treat them in a civil, courteous manner. What you think of them in private doesn't have to be aired on a public forum.

My riding instructor was treated very badly by his business partner, and forced out of the business by him. It was done under the table, and resulted in a very nasty court battle. Several years later, they were both at the same horse show. My instructor was one of the officials, and his ex-partner was there with some of his students. In full view of the spectators, my instructor walked across the arena and shook hands with his former partner.

I always knew who the better man was...  Teeth Smile

As long as bullying and belittling is allowed here, it will never stop. I wish there were at least one forum where it was forbidden and where show people could have a protected discussion about their dogs without being interrupted by meanspirited comments.  Evidentally the same members can't even get along with their workingline peers.
