Mysti, What state/city are you in. If your near, I will help link you up with an excellent trainer who has dealt with GSD for 25 years and will not tolerate that disrepect.

First thing I would do is stop letting him jump on people. Putting his front feet on her shoulders shou;d not be tolerated..

Domenic, that is indeed a unfortunate experience I am so sorry that it happened. It seems to me that a person gets better results and a genuine caring relationship with a smaller breeder than a high priced puppymiller. Good breeders who sell to the general public as well as working/show homes don't just breed for the show ring or the field they breed for the overall picture. German dogs are certainly hardier than their North American counterparts and when buying one strickly for a pet requires honesty on the breeders part to ensure a safe happy home. I sincerely hope you have now a GSD you can enjoy for your lifestyle and Mysti is able to get the help she needs to control her Kolbi....

Mysti I live in NW Montana. If you are willing to travel a little maybe I could hook you up with a dog group in Spokane area. They have been at training Schutzhund for sometime and know alot of different temperments.

Domenic, I'm sorry for your sad experience. I also know of a very large breeder in the Abbotsford/Aldergrove area here in BC who is of the female persuasion. She will not take back pups on temperament faults. She will persuade a prospective buyer of the pup he must buy (and she is so experienced and knowledgeable, who would doubt?) and then, if the pup is showing fear and even viscious traits, for the first year it's "oh, they go through so many stages!!" and then later, when it's still a problem and getting worse, it's "she/he ruined the dog!" And then the tragic tale ends with the dog being put down for visciousness and all on the buyer's head. I'm speaking here of knowlegeable owners and long-time GSD owners when I say this, so it's not a question of a newbie not "getting it right with a dog that's beyond the abilities." Some breeders will do anything to get rid of pups for the price and when they breed about 125 pups per year that they need to sell off, when it's the bread-and-butter of an operation, many sad and tragic results will follow.

More often than not, Redcap, the pups you speak of in your area have not been properly socialized and stimulated. Then when the critical time frames have already passed, yes, it can be very hard for new owners to make up for that. It is about money for some of these people, and they could give a damn about the dogs really. I have seen breeders here offer no help even when owners ask for it, and then begin to dance and tell the new owner that everything is the owners fault, when in fact, it often was something, be it illness or socialization issues, that began with the breeder. Sad state of affairs. Then the poor owner ends up with no where to turn and it often ends poorly for the dog. This is why I rarely breed and I will NOT sell a dog for the money. It is about the owner who will raise this pup and with whom I will have a lifetime connection to, not to pry, but to help them get as much enjoyment out of their relationship with their dog as I do mine.

Why are you people bothering us with a poignant, meaningful post about the demise of our breed when you could be engaged in a fun and frivalous conversation like, 'what's more important tempement or health.' Please allow us to stick our heads in the sand so we can feel good about ourselves and ignore reality.

by hodie on 21 February 2007 - 03:02

Spook101, Sorry, lost my head looking at the pups from the ad titled "NEW LITTER HAS ARRIVED". Now them is some dogs........ Excuse me while I go stick my head in the sand.....LOL Regards to you.

Honestly Spook What is wrong with one who is willing to further their knowledge of the GSD? and what is wrong with one exploring others opinons/feelings about the variables? Why do you detest anyone who wishes to expand ones education ? I truly do not understand you ? If you think the breed is in such a sorry state, do you honestly beleive YOU and YOU alone will "fix" it ? Big Task, hats off to ya !! Git Er DONE Good Luck and when you have this breed all "fixed up" give me a call so I can congradulate you K?
