Is not over sized GSD it is a different breed.

They have breed status only under RKF,not FCI.

i was serious about the HD question, if the claims are true that HD &other issues that plague the GSd has been eradicated in this breed then would it not be a betterement for the gsd breed to do an outcross, the close minded breed purists think bottle-neck before you speak..

by joanro on 02 January 2015 - 21:01

HD is not that huge a problem in the gsd.

by vk4gsd on 02 January 2015 - 21:01

you obviously have never seen the heart break, financial cost and suffering of the affected dogs and beloved owners to make a callous statement like that.

by joanro on 02 January 2015 - 22:01

Vk, according to ofa, the HD in the gsd is only about 19%. I bought a gsd female SL that was only three yr old that I had to euthanize because she had no hip sockets and the arthritis was extensive. How many of those zero HD dogs do you think it would take to absolutely eliminate HD in the gsd to make it worth crossing in ? I'm being realistic.

To say it will fix the HD problem in the breed? You better plan on bring a boat load to every country that has gsd...you know, like they ark, only with your Russian dogs. Lol

by joanro on 02 January 2015 - 23:01

Saying I must never have seen the heartbreak of owners of a dog with HD....I've experienced it first hand.

by vk4gsd on 02 January 2015 - 23:01

disregarding the emo stuff, i get HD will never be eliminated, but  if it can reduce the frequency without significantly altering other traits, why is it so crazy to consider.

i refer you to the vet who made a cross of pointer into the dalmation to mitigate some horrible problem, it apparently worked. you all know the story.

only the breed purists idiots had a problem with it making ridiculous comments like (paraphrasing) it is better to have a sick breed than to have impure genes, that idiot mentality should be illegal.

http://www.dalmatianheritage.com/about/nash_research.htm
"The backcross project continues on a rather small scale. A litter or two is bred each year, and a total of about 90 backcross Dals have been born as part of the "West Coast branch" with a smaller number in the Midwest and other areas.
When a backcross Dal is bred to a registered Dal, about 50 percent of the puppies have low uric acid while the other 5O percent inherit the high levels. Those with high uric acid are just like the registered Dals. The low uric acid offspring are also typical Dals in type and temperament, except that the size of the spotting has tended to be slightly smaller."

Vk, HD is polygenetic so it would not have the same bennefit to cross your Russian dog with the gsd. HD free dogs already exist in the gsd. Every dog in the dal breed is affected with the high uria prob and so no way to breed it out. That's why the pointer was uesed.

Has any of the experts here looked at pics of these russian shepherds?

The only thing similar,  is the word shepherd....

I think the wizard from down under, with all his extensive knowledge of this breed (german shepherds) , between his owning one and his you tube experiences , needs to get busy creating the perfect breed.

After all, Max knew nothing about the breed, the SV is ruining the breed....only vk and his swamp tromping knows what is best for the breed. GET REAL ....

SORRY BUT....WTF, talk about moronic comments. I really can't take stoopid...double oo stoopid

Joan....you need to consider the source of those ridicules statements
