Yeah, but this is the logical conclusion out of VK´s exaggerating headline ...and we agree ! Wink Smile

My fear is geraldo Riveria shows up at any dog venue with a camera and an agenda. All organizations should stand for proper breed standards, proper animal husbandry, and humane handling of our charges. Now we had 70 plus pages on a similar subject this month. a proper breed standard should enforce and require health in the named breed. No 300 pound great danes, 2 pound yorkies, or 7 foot long dachshunds. [ 299 pound great danes are bad, 2.2 pound yorkies are too small, but a 6.5 foot long dach is just fine]  COL   [ crying out loud]

How could this be a good thread UNTIL vk entered it HE started it

Why be mad at him because YOU keep taking his bait

Why do you pay him any attention IF he is a troll, he will wither and go a way if not fed

Just because he asked questions in a manner that SOME do not like he will not be banned

Susie has a nice attitude about him  she has him figured out

All AKC breeds do have "proper" breed standards and codes of ethics/breeders codes generated by and approved by the members of each individual breed club. Those clubs have the authority to sanction members for not conforming to those standards, but there are still many more people breedings dogs that do not belong to breed clubs. Some states. most I think, have puppy lemon laws that protect buyers of new puppies. There are already plenty of local laws governing how breeders care for their dogs, most written by politicians who have never owned a dog let alone know how they should be managed. And now we want laws that govern what each breed should look like? Who is going to legislate such laws and who is going to enforce them?

"And now we want laws that govern what each breed should look like?"
For me it´s not about the "look like" but the "live like".
As soon as the human plays god by deciding about the breeding pair this human should be responsible of the quality of the resulting life.
There are breed clubs who KNOWINGLY accept dogs for breeding that are neither able to live a good life without help nor are able to give birth without help (c-section).

"Who is going to legislate such laws and who is going to enforce them?"
In case the clubs don´t change their mind I hope that national law will enforce these "rules".
The disadvantage: At this point there will be people deciding, who may not be involved in dogs, dog behavior, and later on in dogsports.

All of this will be the result of uncaring, stupid, and inhumane breeders and owners.

Susie, l hope that your scenario never happens in the USA.

What about the breeders who don't belong to breed clubs or who breed mixed breeds or who use one of the splinter registries in the US ? Exactly correct, such laws would be legislated by politicians and/or special interest groups who know zip about dogs. That would leave us open to laws that could forbid dogs of a specific color from being bred - everyone knows blacks dogs are meaner than white dogs. Or some politico's kid got bit by a GSD so let's forbid them too. So certain breeds are fobidden in Europe? Forbidden from what? Being bred, forbidden from being resigistered? Exhibited? Sold? What is forbidden amd how is it enforced?

thought these two quotes were interesting;

Show Dog Exaggeration

"Judges give ribbons to the dog that is the most exaggerated in "breed type" which is why they are bred from and that is why the public is rejecting extremes in today's purebred dogs...

When Judges award the most extreme (type) features, breeders strive for those extreme physical characteristics....."

Let's poor out the  baby with the bath water. Well I mean during communism in Czechoslovakia the breeding of GSD was strictly  regulated by government and it generated some of the best GS dogs . Maybe we should go back to communism then,...lol then at least the dogs will be bred correctly. By reading some of the posts it is obvious that we are heading that way already,,., so not to  worry. Thus - It'll get better-NOT!
