Dude, I'm sorry, but Rin Tin Tin was an uggo.  Yeah, he helped bring the GSD to prominence, but I wouldn't wanna own one like him.

"Dude, I'm sorry, but Rin Tin Tin was an uggo.  Yeah, he helped bring the GSD to prominence, but I wouldn't wanna own one like him."

that is a really intelligent critique coming from a breeder and competitor of ASL dogs.

do you have anything more objective than "uggo" with yr vast knowledge and experience?

the actual dog was apparently in real life a great dog, why "wouldn't you wanna own one like him." if he is a great dog, not to mention he spawned an lucrative industry for pet & show dog breeders like yourself to cash in on.

There is a book, written about 5 years ago, on Rin Tin Tin. It tells the story of A Duncan's GSD from WW1 war ravaged france, to RTT's movies, to the present time mess over who owns the BRAND rintintin. I recommend reading it as a narrative of how one talented dog made a man think he was a trainer to the S-IT breeding done in his name in recent time. Duncan went off on his own with his dogs and never duplicated the orginnal animal in anything but hype. Read it as a narative to this thread and how uninformed breeding practices end up in the trash heap [ maybe a golden cow] and do nothing to further the GSD or pure breeds.

When one is so busy pontificating to others, the mind is too closed to actually "learn".

Suggestion: read Louis Donald's commentary on GSD structure for a different perspective.

vk, just to muddy the waters a bit further, you posted a pic of the Westminster winning Peke ( I think it was Malachy, anyway). I bought a Peke who was similarly bred. The breeder is a very conscientious person when it comes to health and despite their exaggerated type (your interpretation of exaggerated- it's subjective like anything else!), her dogs are, as a whole, very healthy, hardy, happy little dogs, unaffected by the stereotypical smash-face problems (breathing, eyes, facial wrinkles, etc.). He can run and play and doesn't even keel over when it's hot out. He has no eye problems or breathing problems and barely even snores.

Now, take the backyard bred version of a Peke and look at the plethora of health problems- look at Pekes in rescue and the missing eyes, sinus surgeries, etc. How would making the show world be illegal help them? Their breeders didn't care about anything but making a quick buck on a cute pup and did nothing to ensure healthy, sound dogs. Their temperaments are also often lousy, whereas the 2 Pekes I bought have adorable personalities.

My point is that like most well-meant but ill-planned laws, they legislate and restrict the wrong folks and do not succeed at the purpose they were designed for. You cannot police everything!
