I fail to see how a dog that looks like it's melting is beautiful to any extent.

If you've ever watched an AKC show on TV (Westminster, etc) the announcers like to say the Neos are judged on how great their WHAM is - wrinkles, head and mass. The judges must have rewarded dogs that had more WHAM so that's what breeders tried to produce.

I don't know if it should be illegal, but show people and judges should have more commonsense. Like how long did we mutilate tail and ears of boxers, rotweilers, dobermans etc. for esthetics.

Ad the time it is forbidden in most countrees in europe but only fairly recent.

My neighbour has a nice doberman he still looks weird to me,  that's how profound these pratics have been in our view of certain breeds. And what about the longcoat GSD that was excluded untill 2001.

I beleive they are preparing a law against breeding of the frenchbulldog with extreem short mozzle with causes severe breading problems.

It is up to the judges on these venues to have a policy that insures health in every dogbreed.

it should stay legal, but they should be audited

Should something be made illegal because you or I don't like it or disagree with it?  How much do you like your life legislated by others?  We pay hundreds of lawyers hundreds of thousands of dollars each every year to do nothing but write more and more laws.  There are so many laws written that you have to have whole libraries dedicated to those laws.  Then more laws are written to help further define those laws.  In the 1800's legislators weren't paid it was a volunteer position.  Most things should be common sense.  Do some groups in the show world lack common sense?  No doubt.  But do we need legislation on it?  I think there are better ways.  I feel some on the working side lack common sense as well.  And I personally am not opting to have them legislated because I might disagree with them either.

In the AKC world the breed clubs are responsible for generating the breed standard that best describes the ideal dog of that breed. The AKC must approve, and the judges are expected to have enough sense to understand what they read and are taught in Judge's Education Seminars and to make their selections in accordance with that standard.

I think
a dog who isn´t able to give birth on its own
a dog with major problems within its respiratory organs
a dog with a tremendous under/overbite
...
shouldn´t be allowed to be bred.

Further on I think every dog ( animal ) not able to live a good and healthy live on its own and give birth on its own, shouldn´t be bred at all.
In "real" life thes kinds of animals wouldn´t survive/they wouldn´t reproduce themselves - so WHY do we think we are allowed to outdo nature and natural selection?

"Most things should be common sense.................  I think there are better ways."
You shouldn´t believe in "common sense" too much - doesn´t work.
I don´t see better ways, do you? Don´t tell me "Educate" - these dogs are bred and trendy ALTHOUGH breeders/buyers know about their deficencies.
I don´t care about color, size, standard, temperament, working/showline in this context, but about QUALITY OF LIFE for the single specimen.

common sense is not very common.

clearly reggie your preffered approach results in socially acceptable trade and suffering of dogs.

you have not refuted the article, you have only expressed your politics.
