As long as she's delivering them, they are either viable or not. She hasn't been in labor for days.

The rest of the litter can be fine...Hopefully with the one "Still Born" puppy out...and it hasn't been too long...The rest should be intact and fine...

Just my opinion but I think the female needs emergency vet care asap. Waiting is not a good thing under the circumstances described

Was the placenta in place on the stillborn female? Was any attempt made to revive her? Did it appear she'd just passed or been dead a few days? Or are you still kicked out of the whelping room, SS?

SS--re Eska, you don't want to make her vomit any further...you need to get material into her gut that will envelop the cording so it can pass through the system safely, the same way one does when a dog ingests glass or needles: soak cotton balls or similar-sized balls of soft white bread in cream [you need the density], and feed them to Eska until you can palpate her belly and it feels full, but not overly so; after that, it's a matter of waiting until she passes it all.

Puppies and the stuff they find to gnaw on...the entire floor of a room can be covered with enticing things to chew and play with, and they'll STILL go a-hunting for something you DIDN'T put out there for them.

K can also help Gwen out by gently assisting with the contractions, when she can feel the pup in the birth canal when she places her hands on Gwen's flanks. When Gwen strains, K can gently 'milk' the pup forward as well, in effect helping create a stronger contraction that will move the pup further along than Gwen can do alone. If the pup feels like it's very large, it's also helpful to leave one's hands in place *behind* the pup, with just enough steady pressure to keep it from slipping backward as Gwen rests between contractions.

Personally, at this point, I'd be very hesitant to disturb the bitch by packing her up and hauling her outside in arctic-grade temperatures and wind chill to get her into a clinic right now. As long as she continues to stay focused on what she's about, and doesn't show evidence of dystocia, and puppies are delivered at fairly regular intervals, I'd opt to stay with the bitch and provide help as I've just described.

This type of whelping is exactly what I don't like about bitches that will stand and allow the stud to breed them for two weeks' time...you typically end up with pups that are at different stages of fetal development because there were eggs fertilized on different days. I expected there to be at least one still born, and frankly I won't be surprised if it turns out there's a few underdeveloped pups as well as one or two that were in the 'bakery' a bit longer than they ought have been.

Oh my! SS you certainly have a full plate! Leave it to a pup to find something naughty when you're distracted! I hope the remaining pups are ok....Im trying to stay away from FB, but there can be helpful folks along with the trolls...sending you all the prayers & good vibes I can muster...

K. finally took her off to the veterinary ER... one live pup so far!

Will keep you posted....

Oh, and Eska, the little brat, is doing fine. She only removed about an inch of the fireplace door gasket, and I retrieved most of it from the living room rug. I am sure her mouth feels pretty prickly right now, but I don't think she ingested enough of it to do any harm.

She scarfed down her supper, and is sleeping in her crate.

If she'd headed off at the green/black with out a puppy immediately following, the price would likely be the same, but she'd have more live pups, I'll wager. Sure hope she gets super lucky and Gwen is fine and the rest of the pups are fine. I "wait and see" about a lot of things, but black and green with no pups shortly appearing is not a "wait and see," regardless of my financial portfolio at the time.

I'm not ragging on you, SS. You've done enough bailing out lately. Just wish people wouldn't take risks with their dogs because of their finances.
