I'm glad to hear that she is home. The dog lovers I know would never sit back and see a bitch with puppies stay at a vet's office for the lack of $450. I could have raised that money on my Malamute list in half an hour or less and I'm guessing some here would have helped bail her out too. I'm not saying vets in the US wouldn't put dogs down if the owners couldn't pay for their treatment up front, but I can tell  you that any vet here who would put down a dog without the owners sigining a release would be subject to being charged with at least a misdemeanor. People in CA need to check with the vet colleges and local associations to find out if there is any recourse availalbe to them in the event that does happen. Do vets in CA carry mal procatice insurance? They do here.

All's well that ends well. Let's hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Yes, let's hope so!  Sad Smile

Here's the C-section estimate...SOOO glad it wasn't necessary!!

SS, as much as I feel for this situtation, now that the bill is paid I won't contribute to that fund. These people need to learn that they are responsible for taking care of paying that bill so the lesson sticks and they don't get stupid and do it all over again.

I'd be packing up and moving to someplace where ripping people off isn't leagal.
An aquaintance who is a Komondor breeder had moved here from California because of price gouging. Her female needed emergency c-section at four am. We had hooked her up with my vet, he met her at his clinic which is in the city an hour from here. The c-section produced four live puppies, no dead ones, the vet met them at four am and finished at seven am. The total bill was only $400. Let the situation with sun's friends be a lesson to anyone who wants to breed their bitch...be prepared. Glad the litter is well.

Emergency consultation? X-ray set up fee? Anesthesia induction? Neonatel rescusitation? Surgical pack fee?   Are you kidding me?

Where is this? California?

I've never heard of a $118 x-ray set up fee. O.o

Also, $1600 is crazy pricey for non-surgical assistance. I think I had a female go through something like that for the last few pups she had--I think the bill was less than $500 at the emergency clinic, including xrays.

Blitzen, I hear ya! (re. not wanting to donate.)

Christine, no, it's Ontario, Canada, just north of Toronto, Canada's largest city. :(

Glad the bitch & pups survived. I love my vet, & she keeps her prices low, but I don't know how she handles unpaid bills....I warn them ahead of time if I need services & don't have a lot of cash, & they're very good at streamlining things to the essentials only...which is the way it's supposed to be, isn't it? ***sigh***

But when Ansgar had to have surgery, we got an estimate like that, & we wound up on the higher end of the scale, even though the vet didn't actually cut into her bowel (thank goodness). They took a $700.00 down payment, & said they would work out a payment plan if we needed it. Dear Carl, for all his stubbornness, cashed out the last of his savings & paid for it. All told, well over $5000.00, probably nearer $7000.00 if the local vet visits ( pre surgery center) were counted in. How do you plan for such emergencies? It's just heartbreaking...

Yep almost 9 years ago in NO. California area near Sacramento  I paid a $2,000. C-section bill after  I had whelped 2 live pups ;myself and all stopped and had done a pre-whelp x-ray so knew she had more to come and a l:00 AM emergency to my regular on call vet and only 3 more live pups delivered C-section.  It was 2,000 give or take, maybe even a little bit more but you are so glad for the help at that time you just pay it and go home with the goods.  Had I not done the C-section I would not have my current beautiful sammy boy, now almost 9 and other litter mates one of which is a service dog for a woman with polio, soooooooo, live and learn.  This bitch's uterus had folded over and was blocking the birth canal so those pup's delivered by C-section would have died had I not taken immediate action.  I have learned thru the years not to wait,  so SS this bitch and owner are very lucky.  Yes indeed.  More pic's please, and best of luck, looks like a beautiful litter.  Nan

{PS)  This particular bitch was almost 8;  was not particularly ever a good whelper and was spayed before her next season...(her second litter of 6;  each time lost one pup)...  Not particularly what I call a good tract record for a brood bitch which by the way CAN be an inherited trait from usually dam/granddam, etc.  In her case it was not her dam but I think the granddam ...passed that little jewel on to my bitch...  ugh  not what I would ever want in a brood bitch.

Here's to healthy pup's...  Nan

I am thrilled that poor Gwen and her pups didn't suffer for her owner's poor choices. I certainly hope she sees it at the "holy $h!+ I got lucky!!!" that it is and NEVER does this again. If you're broke (and I've been broke!) you MUST at least have a good credit card for emergencies, especially if you want to breed. To take a chance on a bitch's life and litter because you're "in a rough patch" and are breeding to cover bills is totally unethicial, imo.
