Update: two sets of pups were 'twins', i.e., were attached to the same placenta, so were smaller than the others. Despite supplemental feedings and lots of TLC, we lost the smallest of those pups. All the others are healthy and thriving, and trying to find their way up onto all 4 legs!  Regular Smile

Is she absolutely sure there were TWO sets of pups born sharing a placenta? Not a case of placentas either joining to appear like one or 2 pups born and only one placenta because one placenta was previously detached and not delivered at the same time? Pretty unusual to have true fraternal twins anyway...2 sets in one litter would be pretty rare.

'There have been cases in which two puppies appeared to share a placenta but had separate amniotic sacs. In one such case the two puppies were of opposite sex, clearly not identical twins. Probably their two placentas were so close together that they fused in development.'

Interesting article.

The entire litter is fraternal, unless there is identical twins or two sites.

I am pretty sure she said they were in separate amniotic sacs.
