Spirit, maybe you have a point there, I don't claim I could see that myself.

I have a suggestion that I think would make posts on the forum more friendly and more beneficial, I wish you listen with open mind and heart.

Intentions of posts vary, I wish we would stick to the purpose of post more,

to explain

1. This post was as I see it to bring attention to an event that involves dogs in a show, it was to help one see this type of show and have an idea and enjoy oneself.

Nothing in the title suggests we could discuss this type of breed or dogs involved on individual basis, so it would be nice if we all commented on the show itself, the event, info about dogs who took part and so on.

2. If a person posts about his dog's training, we stick to discussing the training itself, point out good things about the training, point out mistakes done and so on.

3. A person posts his dog for structure critique, we critique, negatives and positives

4. A person makes a post about show vs work, we discusss details, pros and cons, no limits except respect to each other and each's preferences

5. A person makes picture post, we share pics, light comments, no critiques

Let's not turn each post away from what was intended for it, otherwise some will get afraid to make posts because of worry their post will take a path other than he/she intended. My opinion, I could be wrong

Susie do you mean a dog that looks around at everything and gives off the look of "I own all of you"   That is the look attitude that I want to see.

My above post is to all friends not specifically to Susie Teeth Smile

Susie, unlike SV shows where judges ONLY judge GSDs, in AKC judges are approved to judge several breeds.  This means often times judges will be more thorough in their examination.

Quite frankly, I think it's a crappy GSD that can't tolerate having somebody go over it.  The judge is not a threat, and it is a weak nerved dog that thinks a harmless stranger touching it is worth going after.

Many of these dogs have plenty of spirit, and there are a few that do have that "Own the world" presence...but AKC showing is very much about presentation.  They're not allowed to sound off in the ring, stare at each other, spin around in the gaiting to look behind them.  They are to look straight ahead or at their handler while they are baited.

We do not get to use a large ring at shows like these.  Literally hundreds of breeds are exhibited at this show....it isn't GSDs only.  There is no room for a specialty size ring.  Heck, the ring they got is considered large by most AKC standards!

The judge has dogs do a down and back to see their motion coming and going and sends them around to view from the side.  These dogs, IMO, do a true gait...I can't watch SV style gaiting where all they do is pull pull pull.  To me, there is a huge lack of balance and all I see is restricted fronts and arched backs.  I want to see the dog loose and fluid in motion.

Lord knows that dogs don't herd on a tight leash.

Two completely different styles of showing.  I've shown in both venues and know which one I prefer.

Blitzen, you are not seriously mouthing off to Susie about GSDs, are you? As far as all the dock diving and flyball, I can go to the pound and pick up a mutt and compete in those sports, what sets the GSD apart from them and shows its true character is its ability to do bite work, end of.

I have been to hundreds of AKC obedience trials, spoke to many judges and watched hundreds upon hundreds of people compete with their dogs and here is the common denominator....98% cannot train nor handle a dog to save their lives. It has been so bad, that I now will sit outside so that I dont have to watch pathetic performances while my fiance competes with her dog. The judges I asked about this phenomenon all tell me the same thing, "wrong temperament dogs, wrong training, all based on food rewards, no compulsion, handlers too slow to keep the dog motivated". In the end, they have to award someone a ribbon so they can keep getting assignments and make money. A simple IPO I obedience routine is more demanding than those "highest" levels of AKC obedience you spoke of and this is coming from someone who is NOT into sports.

You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. HD. Have a nice day.

Indeed we are my dear Blitzen, however, opinions are what has been the downfall of every former working breed. The actual facts are very different though, arent they Blitzen? They are also very hard to look at and accept when our opinions are not the same as those facts. See Blitzen, reality is not about perception, reality simply IS and its NOT open to interpretation, not by me or you or anyone...its just simply very hard to accept by most. You have a great day too dear.
