Ibrahim you come across as your definition is correct. There are alternatives to it on this thread. Like about everything in the breed people make it up to suit themselves like the standard.

Yeah Lineage  but that Wiki entry does not describe what Dulce

actually DOES - what does the FBI need its first & only Therapy

dog for ?  Bringing down the blood pressure of all those Agents ?

High blood pressure is a serious big time killer and lowering it a big time biz. :)

I've been looking for a GSDCA article from the 1960's for you all . It might disclose why the GSD was transferred out of the working group and into the herding group after the 1968 Chicago riots, in the U.S. sparked by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. DemoDogs photo DemoDogs68.jpg
Due to the rioting at the time the April 7th 1968 meeting was moved to an apartment overlooking
Lake Michigan owned by members. as per the published minutes.

Hope you can track that article down Lineage, I'd like to read

it.  UK  KC moved GSD from Working Group to Pastoral Group

also - but the move was a good deal later than '68.

Our County's Prosecuter's office has therapy dogs, one of which is a German Shepherd Dog, that the county uses for child sexual assault cases. The dogs interact with the children and make the children more relaxed and confident, the children are able open up and tell what happened to them. The FBI uses them in the same manner. They are working dogs in my opinion.

My GSDs are working dogs. For sport and PP, failure in either category means they will be placed in a "pet" home.  They dont work in my chosen venues to my standard they dont stay.  Not pets.

I have two Chihuahuas.  One is a reg Therapy dog, has the papers etc.  He is a pet, whether or not he could do that job he would still have a place here.  No expectations, no requirements, no caveats.  Pets.

Haz, serious question for you :

What about the relationships between you and the dogs ?

IME dogs 'work' better for you if you have 'bonded';   and if you have

bonded emotionally how can you just rid yourself of a dog which does

not meet your criteria for being good @ its job?  However carefully you

place it elsewhere.

Hundmutter, I cant anser for Haz, but, I can tell you my version. When you depend on a dog to make a living, that dog MUST work, regardless of whatever else. Most of us who buy these dogs to depend on, get them as adults so they can prove they have the drives and temperament to do the job, but, shit happens sometimes and the dog cant do it...if you dont have the place, time and temperament to deal with multiple dogs, plus all the expenses involved with that, the dog/s have to go somewhere where they can be happy and taken care of better than what you could provide.

Its not decision based on emotion, but reality and reality does suck occasionally, but, it has to happen. I bought my GSD puppy at 10 weeks old, 2 years a go. I raised and trained him, in the house, no outside kennels. MY kids loved him, he loved them and he was THE perfect dog for my needs and those of my work and my home situation. 2 weeks a go, I put him down at the age of exactly 25 months. I lost a would be partner, a great dog, my kids lost their buddy and my girlfriend lost her "woofer" as she called him...heart breaking for everyone, for sure, but, it was a decision based on reality and it had to happen because it was based on what was best for the dog, first, then us humans who can use logic.
