DA

What you think is the cause of the behavior of the latter dog?

Dawulf:

Thats why the last thing i want to see is the score book and the first thing i want to see is the dog work. IPO is not a true test of a dogs abilities.

Many Great so called sport dogs are very much able to bite for real with Sleeve or no Sleeve it mostly has to do with training, if the dog was trained to focus and target the sleeve or not ?,if a dog is trained many hours to bite just a sleeve then he will target what he has been trained to do,for example when a police department buys a dog only trained for sleeve then they will retrain the dog to bite without it.

Refer the thread re the mal in the blind all but surgically removing the helpers arm from his body.

Most half decent ipo dogs will bite on the field sleeve or no.
It's when you take them off the field and don't give them any of the usual cues for protection like a yelling decoy or putting on a harness that some confusion can occur.
Training every possible situation you can think of like biting on rooms, having objects thrown at the dog, being struck by objects, sprayed with water, biting hidden equipment, ambush scenarios, suits, sleeves, screaming decoys, silent decoys, friendly / combative decoys, multiple bad guys, bitework in the dark etc etc.
The more you do the stronger the dog gets if he learns to win in all these scenarios.

Also for those that feel its too easy for some dogs to know when a hidden sleeve or bite suit is worn then put a muzzle on a dog and dress the man just in shorts but hes prob going to get alot of bruses and scratches and if still in doubt lock a guy in a cage so the dog cant get to him and see how bad the dog trys to get to him.

A good working dog should be able to take up either route, but most can only do one or another. Ring, PSA, IPO they are all gear related, and are sports. PP training is just that personal protection. Prosthetic arms, muzzle work, and hidden sleeves. Even a bite suite is just big sleeve. Only dogs trained in PP can hold there ground, and maybe 1% of sports dogs will bite for real.

I think it is more to do with training than the dog itself. A well trained dog should only do what its trained to do. Why is that such a hard concept.
