He's oversized, she wants oversized again. She discusses his needing a muzzle, anxiety issues, allergy issues, etc. Thus, wanting a dog just like him all over again and seeking the same breeder is knowingly supporting that type breeder.

I too think a Shiloh would probably be better, vk4.

by vk4gsd on 11 April 2015 - 00:04

you are being unreasonably literal - she loved her dog and wants one like him does not mean she loves allergies and wants a dog with allergies.

any grown up could figure that if they were not knit-picking and fishing for drama.

so well bred dogs never go to vets or ever have allergies or HD etc?

as for the size, lots of  showlines in particular and working lines are oversize. so many people want big dogs with big heads and big bones these days so breeders breed them, not uncommon at all.

breeding to the standard is a complete joke, which standard?

people breed to whatever their personal prefernce is or whatever they think will sell which has been proven on countless threads here so why pretend all of a sudden that it isn't.

Are you not reading every post, vk4? She is SPECIFICALLY LOOKING FOR THE BLOODLINES AND/OR BREEDER OF THE MALE WITH POOR TEMPERAMENT AND HEALTH PROBLEMS that she gave away. What part of that do you not understand? I'm not picking on anyone, nor is anyone I've seen who stated the same thing to a degree. Why look to support a BYB on purpose? Adopting a dog (truly adopting, not buying off CL) is different than knowingly, intentionally, buying from an irresponsible breeder.

I don't see how I'm being "unreasonably literal." I think I'm reading more carefully than you are.

But Jen:  that is atypical response of someone wanting another dog "like the previous dog" out of a love, love situation, not what WE necessarily what to hear but in her pet person eyes what she thinks she wants... OH how sweet she wants a dog just like she had, maybe a rescue, maybe not.  NO.  In most cases we don't want to sell to a person like that, but case may be that she truly loves her dog but does not know how to get another dog that will suit her needs.  Sorry, but maybe just maybe we have to think out of the box here.

I don't like how she worded things either, but I do feel she might be genuine in her needs for another dog.  Nan

This is not nearlly as complicated as it's becoming...

We tried to suggest that, Nan, and give ideas as to how to go about getting a quality dog that would suit her needs. We tried to point out that another dog like the old one (that she gave away; the dog did not die) doesn't make a lot of sense, given all the problems. Again, this brings us back to finding an ethical breeder or getting a rescue, as opposed to finding the BYB that produced her problem-laden last dog.

Vk4gsd is the one I was trying to hammer the idea into, in case you misunderstood. He didn't understand what I was saying, either, because he didn't read all the posts (guessing). She *did* specifically state she wants to find the breeder or same lines as that dog. That's the part that is rubbing people the wrong way. That's not the same as saying "I miss my dog and would like a dog who is like him in these ways.......blah blah blah." Of course, that is normal. I (and others) tried to point out that seeking out BYBs who produce oversized, allergy-ridden dogs with sketchy temperament is counterproductive to rescue...and counterproductive to getting a nice pet.

And now I give up...tried to make a point...went over like a lead balloon...c'est la vie. G'night, all.

Sad that Oli sets up a section for NEWCOMERS in hopes that established members would not berate newcomers and it comes down to this. I hear complaints all the time about a lack of new members and posts, I wonder why????

This section is for new members and if you cant be nice and help those who ask for help, then say nothing and move on. SMH.

It is so much easier to belittle people that ask about the things that are so obvious to the rest of us....

I been guilty myself of being rude when I thought someone asked something stupid....

And, such a shame she gave this dog away for some stupid readon likd a divorce instead of the more accepted przctice of making room for a new female to breed...the gaul....

Amen, KitKat and Admin.

So I gave my dog away? All Willie nillie as certain posts are insinuating? ? NO! I was forced to make a decision to place him into the rescue. I kept him until the foster was found. And I constantly ask them for updates if any on him. I stated if a breeder with similar working size dogs is known that I would like to know them as well. It is in my first initial post. But sadly, all that seems to of been noticed was my desire for a dog that looks like Gunner. . Why do I want a puppy versus a rescue? I have done the rescue bit. I've fostered. .. I've been crucial in the placement of dogs in wonderful forever homes. I got gunner as a six month old.... full of issues I had to spend months working with him on. Is is selfish of me to want to start with a puppy?? A cute cuddly puppy? I haven't had a puppy of my own in 7 years. :( didn't realize that made me a bad person?? At this time I only want to introduce one more dog into my,house. And I want it to last it's lifetime. I have a nearly BLIND dog. She cannot read other dogs body language.. rescuing an adult dog may set her up for issues. A puppy would alleviate much of that concern. My search for a dog like Gunner was called disgusting. ??? By two posts here.. that's calling ME disgusting because I want a pet?? I have no interest in breeding. . And TY KitKat.. exactly . I did not give my dog away to make room for a new female etc.. and yes ADMIN. . Anyone reading these posts will probably be hesitant to post :(..
And Ooo btw... if u didn't read it BEFORE.. i said please don't chastise me.. FOR GETTING RID OF THE DOG IN THE FIRST PLACE.. i cry for him still. . It's been over 6 months!!!! Im ridden with guilt.. even though he is happy .. i still regret having to place him with the rescue. :(. So I asked not to be chastised because I anticipated people berating me for rehoming him.. not because I wanted a puppy

I'm going recommend Craig's list to every person who calls asking for recommendation for a reputable breeder and a good family dog. They are more likely to get the 'perfect' dog they Invision off Craig's list than anywhere else. And all so, I will recommend the jocky lots to meet up with those breeders. After all, it makes no difference who the dog comes from and 'every body is doing it' so that makes it all good. Who gives a happy horse dooky what happens to the gsd as a breed, after all, what matters is that people get the dog they imagine as the perfect dog. And when the going gets tough, send it to 'rescue' and get another one when the dust settles...they're a dime a dozen and can be found in any jocky lot and Craig's list ad. And I'll set up a table next to the byb at the flea market selling the muzzles and any other paraphanalia the breeder recommends with cute puppy.
I'm not familiar with the byb who advertise on Craig's list, but I will make an effort do that so that I can recommend to newcomers who ask if anybody knows the breeder they got their last over sized problem dog from how to contact them. And any newbs looking for fashionable trendy style gsd puppies will get a list of the up and coming bybs from me.
Matter of fact I can get the name and number of a byb been in gsds for 25 yrs and he specializes in Big Bone Big Head over sized gsds. In fact he is so committed to producing those popular kinds of dogs that he even breeds the 'proper' type male regardless of the dog having an undiagnosed ( because no vet has seen the dog ) back problem causing the dog to be weak in the rear. But the guy proudly announced 'But he can still breed!' And then there are the dogs producing multiple pups with megaE that are still being bred. The sad buyer of one of those pups called me looking for a replacement dog...after three years their dog had to be put down, his little kids were heart broken.
But by golly, that man produces some big headed monster dogs that are real sweet...except the ones that are over reactive and too aggressive and have to sent back where they came from. Y'all who think nothing wrong with people who breed to no standard and unethically, just to make puppies to sell, go talk to some of the people who experienced rthe heartbreak of getting these ' justified -because -everybody- wants- them' pups and go look at the filthy conditions those 'popular' breeding factories live in....its an eye opener and tends to give any one with empathy towards people and dogs a different perspective to those who are speaking from an innocent one.
