If a cop shoots a dog on a leash outside of its house or inside of a house, they should be reprimanded and have mandatory training and the owners deserve restitution.

hiwever, it is my personal opinion that any dog off leash outside of the house without supervision (backyard, front yard, anywhere) is the owners fault, not the cops. Cops are not animal whisperers. My husbands job is not to be animal control or waste priceless time on a dog when there is an emergency situation. (Lost child, etc)

My two German Shepherds have never been shot. They are also never left unattended in the backyard, even for five minutes. We always watch out the window. However, we have a police k9 and that is the rule from the department.

Why is it a rule? Because an animal that has the power to kill a child or adult should never be left outside without restraint.

anyone who leaves their dog in the backyard and it gets shot by the cops, regardless if they are at the wrong house or not, IMO that is their problem because they could have prevented it. Also, any human who leaves their dog In the backyard while they are not out there to control its barking should be shot because they are asshole neighbors.

if your dog is off leash out in the front yard, that is your problem too. I have the dumbest pet German shepherd in the world and I have no training experience, yet trained him not to go out the front door at 5 months of age.

im just an old fashioned Texan though. I keep my dogs inside for their safety and to not piss off my neighbors and I also follow the law and I am a contributing member of my society.

as for dog training for cops.... My husband spends 40 hours every other month in training. Domestic abuse, child abuse, kidnapping, rape, etc etc. Honestly I would not trade one hour on any of those subjects on how to deal with dogs. It is the owners responsibility to keep the dog on a leash when outside and not left unattended in the backyard.

i thought I would post my two cents since it seems like no one on this forum has ever ridden with a cop before and witnessed how many dogs go after them every week.

one of my husbands co workers has shot two pit bulls In the last three years.... But he has also not shot at least 70-80 vicious appearing dogs that he was able to detain, get away from.

Keep in mind that you only hear about the dogs that get shot. All of you civilians have no idea how many dogs should have gotten shot that the cops waste valuable time or risking injury to save.

^ wow, what a horrible post.

dogs now are not allowed loose on prvate property behind a dog proof fence??

and the owners of barking dogs should be shot, WTF????

unfortunately for her, she is in the USA, not north Korea. The idea that property bought, paid for and taxes paid on it, so that her hubby can get a paycheck is the legal property of cops and the 'civilian ' has no rights to it is just...bs.
Don't ever forget, wifey, if it wasn't for 'you civilians' there would be absolutely no need for your Hubby's job. Your 'holier than thou' attitude gives good cops a bad name. I remember you when your hubby was studying to be a cop....you had the same crappy attitude about the very people who are supporting your husband.

"All you civilians" not really sure whether to LOL or WTF. But sure hope your husband is a better man than you.

The problem with the police and the military is that the "good ones" will stand by and let the bad ones do terrible things and then they will not report it.  It's part of the military culture that has become part of the police culture as well .. our police forces are rapidly moving toward being paramilitary.  The silence rule is that you never rat on your fellow platoon member or officer .. and you never go over the head of your commanding officer.  That is why the cops will watch a bunch of fellow officers beat the crap out of a down prisoner ( Rodney King ) and claim they saw nothing.  Remember the platoon in Iraq that raped a 14 year old and killed her entire family.  When one of the platoon members had enough balls to turn their sorry asses in the Army tried to hush it up and then they came down on the "good one" hardest of all.  After it all became public the Army had to give reduced or "other than honorable" discharges to the whistle blowers but the message remains the same .. no truth telling in the military without the command structure getting to whitewash it first.  The cops and the military go to great lengths and training to silence those who tell the truth if it is criminal or inconvenient to the aims of the organization.  That is why the military has made it nearly impossible for reporters to get unfiltered access to the truth since Vietnam.  All we hear from the military and the Police is what they want us to hear.  Thankfully for state side reporters and news there are video cameras and cell phone videos to show what is really going on with the Police sometimes.  Think the cop in SC who shot the black man in the back and claimed he went for his Taser would have been charged without a bystander video showing that he purposely lied??  I posted a video link showing 3-4 officers dragging a man from his car and one was screaming the man was trying to get a weapon but the video showed the man being beaten and he was not trying to do anything but defend from the brutal and unnecessary beating being delivered by 3-4 brutal cops.  The cops were tampering with evidence by shouting untrue events into their radios while the dash cam recorded a completely different set of events including brutality and unnecessary use of force.

Wifey, you sure seem familiar...but it says you just registered Dec. 14. Did you reregister? Your attitude is soooo familiar. People who have been around working dogs quite a while also have quite a bit of experience with cops, and guess what? They're just people. If you were married to a doctor, would you be lecturing on malpractice? Just curious.

I pity your husband if he reads what you write...he must be mortified.

Geist's owner and friend needs our support and i am supporting him and Geist.  The laws need to be changed for use of deadly force by the police.  The current laws let each police department write their own rules for use of deadly force.  That needs to be changed to a standard set of minimum rules on the Federal level for all  police forces and officers to meet or exceed.  If the local rules are vague or totally ambiguous the cops can hide behind them.  The "I feared for my life" rule is such an example of cops using a boilerplate defense for shooting someone.  The charges in a police shooting mustc ome fm the local DA first and the DA is part of the police and justice business team ( they need to make money ).  The state or Feds can get involved if civil rights, state or feder charges can be supported.  If the local DA is buds with the police and most are you have little chance of even getting the police charged much less convicted (criminal charges the DA will prosecute and they could purposely drop the ball).  On top of all that your dog is property like a coffee table or a lawnmower ad your dogs value is limited and a dog or you get nothing for pain and suffering.  Certainly the requirement that all police wear bodycams is a minimum requirement if we as a society are going to have fewer violent events between police and citizens or animals.  The research to date shows a 60% reduction in violent events when police wear body cams due to both the police and the public acting better when they know they are being filmed.  A win win for everyone.  When a police officer or a citizen goes to the hospital the public pays so the savings from using body cams will far outweigh their costs and all but the guilty will be better served.
