Anyone Ever Heard of Pyometra in a Bitch @ 10 months? - Page 4

When I had to collect samples from my male when he was having prostate problems, I attached the bottom of a bottle of sterile saline to a stick. Worked a charm...but that was 10 years and 4 moves ago, and I have no idea where that home-made collection device got to.

THe problem is, when Eska goes to pee, she's turned out in the yard. When I put a leash on her, it's work time, and she starts looking for treats. The LAST thing on her mind is peeing.

We are still trying. I have her locked in her crate to make sure she doesn't pee on the floor! 

I am using a really small dog dish about 2 in. high x 4 in, in diameter to try to collect the sample. I wonder if there's a stick around here somewhere I could duct-tape it to...

Hell use a broom stick, duster, or anything you can find, I used to use ice cube try (metal) after an alcohol bath and warm soap and water wash before and after use, worked great as shape is good, but anything you can find as sterile as possible, then a sterile catch bottle if you have it on hand.  Refrigerate until you get it to the vet (at least keep in cooler).  Good luck  Nan

How are you going to get a urine sample that's clean when it is passing through puss in the vulva? That urine sample will not indicate where the puss is coming from.

They told me to do a mid-stream catch, but you're right, if there's purulent drainage, it's going to be contaminated unless she's catheterized. However, if they just do R&M (routine and microscopic) on the sample, rather than C&S, that will show if she has a bad UTI, because there will be blood and debris in the urine.

I think I will just load her into the car, and head for the clinic. If they REALLY want a sample, they can collect it themselves!! 

The only way to get a non-contaminated urine sample is to stick a hypodermic needle into the bladder through the abdomine and draw it out with a syringe. If that clinic is too dumb to know that, they should not be taking peoples' money.

Catheter collected specimens should be sterile too, if it's done correctly. 

Sorry, Dawulf, but when you get a group of nurses, vet techs, & breeders together in discussion, you should know better than try to eat lunch! 😂

Jackie, when attaining a sterile urine sample by cauterization of a female dog, 'if it's done correctly' is the catch. Lol.
