Our new pup has arrrived. She is about 10 weeks old and doing well with our other dogs. When we first brought her home, no ears were up. Now one is most of the time, but the other only occasionally. I'm not concerned as I know this is early. My other gsd had both her ears up when we got her. So watching this is all new. Input appreciated.

This seems to vary enormously from pup to pup. Puppy ears go up, down, and sidewards for an unpredictable amount of time; even when they seem to have firmed up they can go floppy again if puppy is under the weather. As long as they are changing position it is probable that they will "pop-up" at some point. They are so funny when they are flopped across the top of the head, especially if both ears do it together so they meet in a point in the middle. That, combined with a soppy ear-to-ear grin, is just so cute! I was playing with our latest puppies one day when my mobile phone rang; they all sat up and listened intently and most of the ears pricked up quite dramatically. It looked really funny as they were barely five weeks old! I imagine that the flipping and flopping is all part of the cartilage toning up and strengthening as they grow, just as it all seems to work the ears get bigger again and go through another phase.... Enjoy your puppy!

Hey Janis, you wrote somewhere before, that it's not good to let puppies play with each other too much, because of the ears. What is too much? And why is it bad for ears anyway? My pup is only 14 weeks and one ear is up, the other not, my female and him love a good "fight", should I not allow it?? Could be difficult :D

Do not worry and do not go to the wrong people for advise. The ears should be up by the time the new teeth come. however it is important to see the ear to comment. Is the entire ear down like a two week old puppy. Or is the ear up at the place it is connected to the head and falling from the middle of the ear. Please allow this pup to chew on a big bone. It shd help. Also if he is fond of the ball pretend to throw the ball but do not - do this religiously for three weeks at least 10-15 minutes each time as many time as you can. Also let this puppy alone in the kennel- other puppys if around will play with him and most often the play with each others ears. You must allow the cartledge in the middle of the ear to stiffen. Check your input of Vit C and increase the same. If all this doesnt work the vet should be able to make a stiff prop inside the ear with ordinary plaster and bandage.

Just an update. She is 4 months old now and her ears look great! My vet refered to her as "Little Miss Big Ears". They still droop a little when she gets tired, but that's ok. Outside our kennel are some bird feeders. She really enjoys watching them. Doing so has made her ears a lot stronger. :)

I¿ve never had this problem myself, but as a precaution I gentely massage the pups neck, head and the area sorrounding the base of the ears. This I do to increace bloodflow to these particular areas. This increaced flow ,along with the other possitive effects to tissue that is generated massage,MAY help to speed up,and in some cases streangthen, the chartalige thet enables the ear to stand erect. I¿ve heard that there are some mechanical aids available in the US but I din¿t know the effects of these. One of then is placed on the inside of the ear;and is said to increase bloodflow. Mostly we do however have to rely on genetics ,no matter what we do.

I just saw the question addressed to me, sorry about that! The reason we don't let pups play together after about 12 weeks is because they tend to use each other's ears as chew toys, they bat each other over the head, they jump on top of each other's heads and that causes the ear cartilage to break down. I know it's just anecdotal evidence but when I've mismanaged a litter, we've had ears that need help. Same breeding, no mismanagement and ears came up. I'm very superstitious. JanisN
