the dutch kennelclub is kind of stupid organization, I have seen cases were people breed against the rules, have to pay a fine, but still get pedigrees on the pups, so if you want to breed outside the rules just pay a few bucks more

I've done several back to back breedings. The uterus ages whether bred or not! There is no such thing as a "break" in canine reproductive terms. None. If the bitch is healthy, as a whole, it is far healthier for the bitch to be bred more often and younger and retired earlier than have these "breaks" imposed by well-meaning, yet biologically-ignorant human emotions. If the bitch is dealing with some other issue and is compromised, then of course, carrying a litter is not in the best interest of either the bitch nor the pups.

If one *must* compare them to humans (which makes absolutely no sense because their heat cycles are nothing at all like a woman's menstrual periods), then if you were a woman, would you rather have 4 kids in your 20's-30's, maybe a year or two apart, or as close together as the body allows, or space them out and have kids well into your 40's. Which do you think is harder on the body? Breeding while young and strong (and remember, a dog's body is meant to work that way or it would not...) or using repro specialists to try and breed an 8yr old bitch because you wanted to give her a year or more off from her last litter?

I am honestly perplexed that this myth still abounds when there are many articles easily found (if one searches ;) ) which directly refute it.

For everybody outside of Europe:
Dutch VDH is not the same as German VDH
Dutch VDH = "VERENIGING VAN FOKKERS EN LIEFHEBBERS VAN DUITSE HERDERSHONDEN" = German Shepherd Dog Club within the Netherlands
German VDH = "Verband für das deutsche Hundewesen" = All Breed mother club within Germany

You can,t compare dogs to people dogs can have big ltters sometimes 10 -14 pups and this is hard working
for the female physical/mental

Most woman have only 1 child if pregnant

Its not my business Jenni if you think its good back to back breeding

Why do I even bother?

It's not about what *I* think is ok; it's about what the RESEARCH shows is healthiest for the dog! So irritating when people want to act all high and mighty about something they have not bothered to research and act like they are morally superior.

If people are too LAZY to do the research themselves on what is truly, biologically best for THE DOG, then they should shut their mouths. People act like the internet is only available to some and those of us who care enough to do extensive research are somehow privileged. Nope. We just cared and so we scoured the medical journals, read the studies, and made conclusions based on hard facts. Others are equally able to do the same.

Comparing woman to dog repro is like comparing cats and gorillas repro. Apes (including human ape) have years of input to raise a child...even gorillas don't have back to back babies, there are years between children so mother can properly devote time to raising infant. Carnivores have litters, they spend only a few months to raise them till the offspring are self sufficient and the monther is very often pregnant again while caring for the last litter. In packs, the adolescents can contribute to raising the new litter, then off to form their own pack or join a new one. Apes/humans have lifelong relationship with family/mother and the females often stay to raise generations in the family group....so no comparison between dogs' and humans' reproduction.

Btw, domestication have screwed dogs up so they can produce two litters a year instead of only ONE LITTER a year the way their wild cousins do. So skipping a season to produce only one litter a year would be closer to 'wild canid' reproduction. And they dont have a litter every year if times are tough.
My opinion is that back to back breeding when the female is in excellent condition during whelp and raising litter and recovery, is not a problem. But I see people breeding females who have already produced back to back litters in EU, then import them bred, ( better to recoup expenses I guess) then breed for another litter, then sell the female bred, to the next kennel and passing her from kennel to kennel being bred back to back till she dies in whelp....that to me is a travesty. But that's just me, I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who think its just business.
