Dogs working with animals in open spaces must cover a lot of ground in a day. The Australian Kelpie is quite different from some of the other AU/NZ herding breeds and work with larger animals as well as sheep. Fast, fit and heat tolerant are desirable traits that come to mind. For a dog to be a day in and day out herder or tender they will probably be thin and efficient in their gaits and will cover 20 miles or more per day in many cases. These conditions usually favor smaller and lighter body type dogs that do not overheat easily. I have some 85-90 pound black GSD that would drop dead if they had to work sheep or animals all day.
