Removed the 2 photos on page 6 and if the author of the thread would like to provide links instead that would be more appropriate.

Its not that I am disagreeing with the basic premise that features can be

'bred out' when too much attention is given to breeding FOR other attributes;

but I reckon, Joan, that you are overemphasising the results.  Genetics does

not seem to work in quite such straight lines.

We have all seen debates on here and elsewhere about various factors which

can be common to all lines of GSDs, and  yes  there are not many GSD which

show an "eye" with sheep and cattle.  But some clearly do exist.  A better question

[and I'd like to see answers from some living people who actually have worked

sheep with dogs on a regular basis, hopefully including those with GSDs - but I

doubt we'll get any ?]  is just how vital "eye" is to sheep work.  Specifically in the

Germanic "living fence" manner.

There are Collies who show little "eye";  but many still get used  on farm flocks

every day.  I have seen dogs working which not only did not have an "eye" but

were actually likely to wimp out when faced with an argumentative ewe.

Not all dogs without "eye" ability are cowards, though.   And lack of "eye" is not

as straightforward as having been bred out of soft Showline Border Collies but

not the working sheepdog side in the BC breed.   Also the WELSH SHEEPDOG,

an older, rarer, breed, usually does not rely on Eye, many if not most are acknow-

ledged not to have it;  instead it drives livestock by being a bit bigger and bouncier

than its BC equivalents.  And it barks at them.  So its more akin to  the New Zealand

Huntaway in that aspect.

The owner of the 'other' puppy was me, so only links are allowed now?

by joanro on 28 September 2015 - 12:09

Hundmutter, this not a debate of where or how any herding dog developed the 'eye'. 'The eye' of the border collie is unmatched by any breed...no gsd can even start the bc. Not surprisingly, you've missed the entire point of this thred before it was derailed.

Every time i cut this board it's still too short.

Obviously if you are the owner my dear you can post your puppy pics, the other is not yours so a link would suffice thank you.

" Not surprisingly, you've missed the entire point of this thred before it was derailed."

Again I thought the entire point of this thread was you posting your newly purchased sheep to work your pups with??

And if you hadn't thrown your toys out the pram when it was not going your way this thread was pretty interesting.

by joanro on 28 September 2015 - 13:09

The pictures I posted became irrelevant after you turned the thred into an 'all-breed' herding videos.
Prior to that, it WAS going 'my way' (what ever that means) as in very nice exchanges and conversation about the gsd with others. Then blitzen interjected her usual snarky comments, like heckle and heckle.
'Show and tell' child's play was not my intention as you assumed, my reason was much grander than that:-)

Bye Joanro have a nice break, It's always someone else at fault with you never you. Always your way or the highway. You have been angry for some time now but with me ever since I moved your herding thread to the CORRECT forum and you just couldn't let it go and move on, so 'll move you on. Give you some time to "work" your pups on those sheep. Maybe now we can get some contribution from members who wish to add without being attacked, or have their preferred type ripped apart!!

Good question Susie, but I think Joan got the banhammer. Guess she'll just have to post on that "other site which shall not be named", lol.
