S&R dogs certainly know the difference. As does a guid dog. Their demeanor reflects a seriousness that a dog doing sport doesn't have, usually...not to mention, the dogs who serve humanity don't just go to the field and do the routine and go home....they are expected to be 'on the job' for many hours, even day and night.
So to answer the op, no it is not 'just symantics' and yes, one is definitely more important than the other---for the respective owners.

@ Blitzen yes I have owned GSD there are some I have owned and trained who are working for military and police world-wide, but I have also owned pitbulls, FCI dutch shepherds and rottweilers.

I am not trying to be rude, just trying to understand you -
did any of these dogs have the chance to become old at your side ( not talking about your teenage times, but during the last years ), or is it only about patrol work and sale, by selling trained, but otherwise still green dogs?
I don´t have problems with that, just want to know your intentions.

SO WHY I???? I TELL YOU LONG TIME AGO  I HAVE WORKED AND TRAINED WITH GSD........

 

 

 Yes Susie there are GSD and other dogs  who  are getting old here but what have this to do with this topic???
