Gee, "Joanro - re puppy mills not relevant to me, as I only EVER have 1 - 2 litters per year. Also it is possible to sell very quickly to people who know exactly what they want and why they want it."

I don't care what you do. My comment was regarding marketing, not you, gee....hard as it may be for you to grasp that.

@ Gigante - try spending a fraction of the time on training as you do copying and pasting, and you might shift some off those pups and adults you are TRYING to sell. (but that are STILL lagging around on the Ethernet lol).

It's all a matter of price, quality of dog, and consumer knowledge.

Very knowledgeable buyers understand the market and will only pay what the puppy or dog is worth in that market depending on pedigree, age, and training. Others just have a price point, want a GSD, and will purchase one of the first things they see.

As a breeder, you can out price yourself in the market and hope for the few suckers that come along and pay the higher amount you're asking even though they could get a "higher quality" dog or one with "more stuff" behind it for the same price, but you risk the chance of never finding those suckers and being left with puppies. You can also undercut the market and sell your dogs for less than "equal quality" and I'm sure you'll get rid of them quick, but you'll also not make as much.

Contrary to what most people think, the market for puppies is pretty efficient. There is a lot of supply out there of every kind of GSD you could think of. Understanding the "value" of the puppies is something that comes at a price, or just doing some extensive research, but in the end, the value will be whatever the customer thinks it is. Price the dogs too high, the market will tell you, price them too low, the market will tell you as well.

To add...things affecting the value of the puppies are pedigree, titles of parents, show ratings, health tests of parents, age of the puppy, health tests done on the puppy, and many other things that we "score" dogs on. On top of that, breeder reputation and reach has a lot to do with it. Someone with a lot of positive reviews and referrals will sell their puppies quicker than someone who is just starting out and doesn't have the same established foothold in the market as a more experienced breeder.

My dog lives in our house , but the 20 x 40 completed basement ( with heating and painted dry walls ) is her " personal space ". Since her arrival in 2014 our dog has never been left alone ( there has always been someone at home ), and she spends her night in our bedroom alternating between the bed and the bedroom floor ( as she desires ). She does not have a sense of being tied and when we go out on the filed shes strays no more than about 5 feet away from me. We go the field everyday and there are many public parks in NYC and we sometimes go to the forest park in the night time. This dog lives as a family member and have a strong emotional bond with us.....as we take care of her emotional as well as physical needs. If we were to have puppies they would get the same kind of caring until they are sold.

We dont keeps dogs on " lock down" or in the back yard.....
