A BYB to me, is one who has more dogs than they can adequately care for, socialize and love themselves. Yes, some kennels employ kennel help, but I worked at one where I was the only one caring for upwards of 90 dogs. After you are done cleaning and feeding them all, there is no time for attention or care. Why was this ''top'' breeder not out exercising or socializing the dogs? Why did they not hire another person or two so that the dogs got more attention?

Okay, so the term "back yard breeder" has negative connotations to the majority of people out there, as I figured. I would say that being called a back yard breeder is an extreme insult, and implies nothing but BAD. Some of the aspects of a back yard breeder are (IMO): a) Buys inferior quality dogs for as cheap as possible; b) Breeds those inferior dogs "just because" they have the two dogs (or doesn't separate opposite sexes when the female is in heat); c) Breeds regardless of the dogs' temperament, conformation, hip certification (lack thereof), and has no clear REASON for breeding (just ask some of these people who have pups listed for $300 why they are breeding and what their goals are!), and no clear plan to improve what they are breeding; d) Breeds the same dogs over and over because it's what is available and free; e) Leaves the dogs in unsanitary conditions, and for extended periods of time; f) "Collects" dogs, ending up with more dogs than they can adequately care for; g)Has a dog or multiple dogs with medical issues that often go untreated; h) Feeds their dogs inadequately (not enough food, too much food, poor quality food, etc); i) Keeps and breeds numerous females, although they cannot properly care for the resulting pups, or costs of c-section or other possibly needed medical attention; j) May breed multiple breeds (purebred or mutts); k)Breeds simply for the money it makes them, and not for the sake of anything else; l) Breeds dogs over and over on every (or almost every) heat cycle for as long as the dog can be bred (gotta' get that last penny out of them, you know! ); m) Does not bother to keep dogs in kenneled (or indoor!) safe areas away from other dogs or things that could hurt them and has dogs get injured in fights due to uncontrolled or uncontrollable animals or circumstances; n) Knows nothing of and could care less about their dog's breed standard; Anyone else have anything they'd like to add? These are just the ones that came to me after very little thought....

I went to visit this one big-name kennel, and I was a little shocked when I walked in her house. She had three or four bitches in bathrooms, bedrooms, etc in little kiddy pools with their pups. On top of a whole slew of pups in a caged area out in the yard, and then 20+ dogs in small kennels spread out all over the back of her property. Is this a BYB do you think?

I apologize. I had a brain fart and stated what I think a PUPPY MILL is, not a BYB. Sorry about that !

The imagine that my mind creates when I hear the term “Back Yard Breeder”, is someone that: Has NO dogs or bitches carrying their Kennel name on their property or IN their kennels although they have created multiple litters in the past. Keeps back NO pups, male or female from ANY litters they have produced during their years of creating all their litters. Someone who sells EVERY single puppy for inflated prices overstating the market for personal monetary gain only. Someone who promotes the sale of their litters before the dam is even confirmed pregnant or the litter is on the ground and accepts deposits on non existent puppies to gain sales for future litters. Someone who tries to act like an actual “kennel” when in fact they don’t have a single kennel on their property and are forced to cage all their animals in crates. (When I hired one Fencing contractor to do some fencing here, he told me about a lady in a surrounding town that attempted to hire him to come into her home and build some type of kennel/crates that were more permanent for her 16 breeding dogs as she was tired of having to individually take them out of each crate to let them out and pick them up to put them back in the stacked up crates she had for them filling 2 rooms!) yikes! Not this to me is a Puppy Mill. Someone that does NOT allow or want buyers to set foot on their property as it is most likely substandard for housing multiple dogs in the first place. (I know of one breeder that confessed to me that they had a buyer that insisted on coming to her place to personally pick out his puppy. Upon arriving at her “facility” he then asked after looking around at 10’ tall weeds, no kennels, plastic water buckets laying in the mud, puppies which were left outside to manage on their own etc. etc. asked “What makes you think that you are entitled to $3,000.00 each for these puppies”? This BYB simply escorted them off her property and learned not to even let anyone SEE the conditions these puppies actually came from) Pictures of the puppy curled up on a blanket with a stuffed bunny on her website gave a completely different “view” to the public, the one the breeder WANTED them to see. Someone that may have a website (anyone can buy a domain) but has not one picture of their facility on their website, does not invite buyers to view or visit with the puppies and someone who much rather ship out of state or out of the country than to allow someone to see their actual “facility” they are embarrassed of. Someone that has a past poor reputation with past transactions with the public and most likely will have future unhappy clients and complaints. Someone that obviously breeds for money without intent of keeping any pups from their “chosen” sire and dam used for the breeding nor having any plans to develop a breeding program they can call their own or show their intent in their breedings. Someone that is all TALK and has nothing to actually show for their breeding after breeding and all their “dogs” both male and females are all bought from outside sources as adults and ONLY after they are of minimum age to bred and only bought TO breed and then rebred upon the next heat, or simply resold and passed along like a used washing machine. The second variety of BYB is the guy down the street that breeds any dog to any dog, sometimes even of the same breed, but this doesn’t qualify as a “breeder” this only qualifies this person as someone who needs to be sat down, shown statistics of dogs surrendered to dog pounds and shown what true purebred dogs of great Bloodlines then shown what “breeding” is truly about. The term “breeder” should not even be used to “honor” this type of person. Why even label this type of person a “Breeder”? This is as I said, the image created in MY mind when I hear the term “Back Yard Breeder” used. SBB
