Autobahn: An easy enough mistake to make considering the only difference between a BYB and a PUPPYMILL is the scale and the fact that PUPPYMILLS breed dogs to sell to ANDREW HUNTE for resale at MCPET STORES.

One can still breed dogs with their own kennel name, keep pups for themselves and be a puppy mill.

I agree with what you all said... one thing that always sticks out to me, and this is not meant to hurt anyones feelings here... if it does, well, then maybe you should consider your own breeding practices/goals... The one thing that I haven't seen mentioned here is a person who is breeding dogs and claims to be "improving" the breed, and never actually trains/titles their own dogs- whether raised from a puppy, or from their own breeding program... this is a person who obviously isn't improving the breed if they can't even produce a dog good enough to work/train/handle/title themselves... And if they keep selling all their puppies and never actually DO something worthwhile with their own dogs, that is just a waste!! They may be breeding titled dogs, and are "wizards" at the whole "pedigree" and "bloodline" BULLSHIT, but when it comes to proving WHAT they can actually produce, they fall short... Why??? Because it's all about the $$$$$. These a$$holes are not "breeders", they are "Puppy makers".... that's it!!! And for anyone that is going to mention the fact that I make a living from dogs, well, yes, that's true- but we only sell adult dogs that are hand picked and raised/trained specifically for the purpose they will ultimately be working in. LET'S TALK ABOUT WHAT A "GOOD BREEDER" ACTUALLY IS: If you look at any worthwhile breeder who is making a mark, they ALL have the true goal of improving the breed, the ALL keep dogs from their OWN kennel and work/train/title/show them... and build a BLOODLINE from their kennel, and they recognize their dogs faults and short comings, as well as the strengths... and they make breeding combinations accordingly, and they typically keep at least one puppy back from EVERY litter to work and to use further for their "breeding plan".. and if that means having one litter ever two years, well.... maybe that's the way it should be. Without knowing what you REALLY have, you can never make improvements... If you're only buying titled dogs, and don't work them, HOW IN GOD'S NAME WILL YOU KNOW WHAT YOU REALLY HAVE????

Sorry Folks, Back Yard Breeder is a slight directed at all of US by "professional" breeders who supposedly know better than we do. The reality is that being a BYB has nothing to do with the listed conditions, but rather is a snotty way of saying Hobby Breeder while implying some kind of sleazy low life puppy mill activity. Ironically there seems to be considerable anti professional sentiment on this site. Regardless of how it sounds, anyone whose kennel is adjacent to or behind their home can be characterized as a BYB. Even those of us who have invested in kennel facilities that compare to those of the professionals are still with few exceptions hobby breeders. I suspect that the BYB designation is likely a creation of the AKC crowd with help from the news media whose heads are crammed so far up their asses as to be a true disability. Whatever conotations a term might carry, I suggest that we focus on the real issues, and avoid falling prey to the hype and b.s. Best Wishes, Jonah

4pack hit it on the head. It's an attitude thing more then number of dogs, breedings etc. The problem I think is more with the mentality of the average Joe out there looking for a " Thourough Bred ". He wants a good GSD but won't spend the money. He wants to spend $ 200.00 and get a good deal. I have said this before but the average John Doe American is a complete moran when it comes to dogs. The U.S. is so advanced in technology, but so ignorant when it comes to dogs. Between kids and dogs it's a toss up. As long as their are people out there that want a cheap dog, back yard breeders will flourish. Supply and demand.

Your better off not breeding yourself Dear. You came here asking for help and when you didn't get your way, now you turn on the whole board? Classic.

Busted!!!

by VONNORDHOFF on 16 March 2007 - 01:03

4PACK?...I THOUGHT NOBODY WOULD STEP UP TO THE PLATE. FIRST OF ALL, YOU'VE NEVER SEEN MY PLACE AND I AM NOT A BREEDER. THAT JUST SHOWS HOW IGNORANT YOU ARE. I ALSO DON'T THINK I'VE MET YOU. DO YOU WANT TO MEET?

by 4pack on 16 March 2007 - 03:03

By stepping up to the plate I guess you were expecting someone to say something? I didn't say you were a breeder, just because you have dogs that can breed doesn't make you a breeder. I stated it would be best if you didn't breed. However if you atre Screwed I know you were trying to aquire a dog to breed and maybe it's best you didn't get her. No for sure I do not want to meet face to face. You have said some pretty nasty things about a lady on here, I might go a little overboard on your a$$ in person.
